There was a well used thread entitled favourite bands or something similar. |

An elite clique of old mates...
Not sure I've ever been elite before! Some of us know each other off forum, some have never met except on here. But it is hard to pretend that we've not been chatting on here for a decade or more, either way. If that involves referring to things that happened more than 6 months ago, then so be it. But new threads by new, interesting people would certainly be more educational and entertaining. |

New here, not seen anything impolite or unfreindly, seems like a nice place with some helpful and knowledgable sailors. There's some great/interesting old threads to read too. I like that some of you have been here for years - thats a good thing! |

I read this thread with a little bemusement. I started posting here in 2003ish - fairly fresh out of uni sailing circuits, interested in what the big bad world of grown up club dinghy sailing had to offer beyond my own pre-conceptions. (A what boat thread about RS600s and Contenders iirc.)
I've met some fantastic people through this forum, so it is sad to see some posts on this thread reduce it to some perception that it was just a shouting factory dominated by idiots and cliques - on the contrary imho; it was a fantastic hub for news, ideas and discussion - a virtual club 'bar' full of characters and viewpoints - helping ease through the daily grind of boring work stuff for well over a decade of my life. (Give SA a run for a few months and see some real ill-informed vitriol, or the boards forum back in the day for a different, altogether less collegiate vibe... none ever 'worked' as well as this place for passing time between sailing sessions!) I popped by today after clearing out some favourites from my browser- the boat thread list peaked my interest, nice to see some old names on there. I even posted - first time since whenever. I hadn't visited this site for a while as my circumstances have changed a lot in the past 3 years- I'm far more likely to be at the beach with my family and our paddleboards now at weekends- it just fits better for family and working life when partner and kids aren't interested in sailing. I thought I'd see what was going on in dinghy land. New boats, new ideas around racing formats, fresh thinking to tackle, or at least off-set, the generational timebomb that's looming for club dinghy sailing... basically anything written of late by Dougal and any activity in follow up to the exceptional research work by Liz Rushall a few years back.
It doesn't appear much has happened innovation wise since the launch of the Aero?? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Or at least it doesn't seem to be discussed here much. Maybe that's a Brexit thing - a lot of people feel their lives are on hold, and certainly business decisions are - I get that. A few of us also had a private Facebook group which had come to the end of its natural road a few months ago. No real discussion anymore - not even a feel good event anecdote or two to stimulate some FOMO for those of us not dinghy racing anymore. A few of us who started it decided to terminate it - better that way. I had assumed what little traction that group had left from those still sailing would have ultimately come back here. I'm not sure if it has or not, but I hope so - it's where the connections originated after all. Anyway, good luck in whatever sailing / watersports you are all doing now - even you PY fanatics - looks like you were right! But for what it's worth, I hope this forum regains some of its former glory as the lure of Facebook wears thinner and thinner for anyone with a brain. Y&Y and its forum has been a great web resource for many sailors, from a multitude of classes, racing experiences and social backgrounds - hopefully it can be for even more in the future. |

I think I've said further up the thread that this place is an oasis of sanity and civility compared to some of the other options. So well said TT I agree.

Sorry to rain on the mutual back-slapping, but it doesnt change the fact that this forum now has a small group of contribututors, and for that, some deeper thinking as to Why, and How to Change, would be more beneficial

Statistics at bottom of home page state 120 Active users and 110 guests, at the moment.
Would need to see site statistics for a definite answer, though wouldn't have thought site would get all the ads if it was in such dire straits ?

I really don't think it's 'moribund' (def :- in terminal decline; lacking vitality or vigour.) It is sometimes a little slow but it still seems to be a welcoming place to new members and advice is given/received in a good natured, considerate manner and there are very few, if any, trolls making it an unpleasant place to visit (it's very 'British' if I can say that). If there is a nucleus of regulars at least they are mostly knowledgable and happy to help others. It would be nice if it was more active, sure, but it is what it is.
