Rob, that has, on the whole, been my experience, too.

The other thing that would of course reinvigorate the place would be another FOM so some more of us could get to actually meet each other like the last time and discover that perhaps we're not the complete dicks we sometimes appear to be..

The Boards forum was fantasticly entertaining in its day. And occaisionally informative! Grumpf did his best there too. But that forum died due to many reasons, and the contributors never did gather together in the same space after that.
Pity

Graeme, I have to say with some reluctance, may be right that with the FOM we brought many of the forum contributors together. I organised the event, from my home at the time in France, with a plan to have a fun event and a chance to meet up with each other. Was great fun even if we had to throw Graeme over the gate to head off to his 'landlady' after closing time I think that all who attended had a great time and also the D-Zero (FYI I have no involvement now) was born at the event from the 'Punk' Sorry that I don't often contribute any more but, TBH, though it all seems very comfortable for all regular contributors but I am guessing that, like me, most are reluctant to put their head above the parapet in fear of some negative or unpleasant responses |

Some of you might recall that I was a regular (possibly a bit too regular) on the forum a while back.
Just to clarify: for one reason or another, I needed a sabbatical from sailing and lost all interest in sailing for a couple of years, but it's gradually returning. I think I just needed a break from the self-imposed pressures of racing. As to the forum, I still think it's a great idea - much better than Facebook where I spend much too much time lurking, but where in the main there are just too many twits making dumb posts, both on the sailing and car groups that I belong to. Another benefit of forums is that you can search them to find the answers to queries previously answered (today: Alu trolleys, which merely coincidentally happens to be current on the forum). I suspect that a fall-off in forum use is to some extent due to a fall-off in dinghy sailing generally, and I'm coming to the conclusion that that is connected with the Jet Stream having moved so far south we're just getting too many extreme wind days (zero or too much) nowadays. Plus more accurate forecasts meaning people stay at home unless it's 'baby-bear' weather [Goldilocks reference]. I'll (probably) be back.

Hope you will be, MM.
This summer, the weather forecasts have looked really accurate, hour by hour, as usual, but have constantly changed as the actual day approached, and then bore very little resemblance to what we actually got. Wind finder and similar seem no more accurate than much more general forecasts, and shouldn't be trusted above going and standing outside... Sadly, I think people do go by them when decision making, and it may be killing organised events. |

......as above plus sailing as an activity can't be adjusted to suit the modern lifestyle. The notion of volunteers helping out in a member run club is less fashionable. There are fewer people interested.
Also this forum used to be full of all sorts of chat, humour, music and socialising generally, it made up most of the traffic. These activities weren't always appreciated by the more established members either. Anyway, there are now other web places, more suited to these activities and that's where many have gone. This forum now looks like an elite clique of old mates, it happens in clubs and it'll happen on forums. |

Can't remember the music ? Play it again
Plenty of humour Still, one of my favourite was Do differents aside to iGRF, saying his Farr had "elderly retired windsurfer written all over it". |
