Any ideas for simple ways to measure distances when laying marks? => Man-over-board can be used if you have a GPS => Golf range finders do not go far enough (<800m) => Binoculars exist with inbuilt compass and reticule but they are very expensive Any other suggestions?

Don't use MOB, just use Set Waypoint and Go To.
So Golf range finder will do just fine for a starting line as long as you're not running an Etchells Worlds. Subtension angles with Bino Graticules is tedious and difficult. Other alternatives are: How many/what fraction of an Olympic Pool/Soccer field Halving the Distance. Tale a look at an Army Fieldcraft Manual on judging distances. But generally GPS is the easiest and most accurate.

Thanks for your reply. Cheers
PS I found apps which are designed to measure golf shot distance. The app gets GPS location at the start and at the end of your shot, and calculates the distance between the 2 locations. Seems to work well. I will do a comparison with GPS.
