And compete in a billion dollar stadium that will be almost completely useless when the games are over. The sailing facilities are relatively cheap and have excellent reuse potential. |

“Back” ... Sailing has been an Olympic sport since 1896, so throughout the heydays of our sport. It remains the pinnacle and is an important factor in why young people might take it up ... a recent talk by Hannah Mills at our club resulted in lots of young attendees, some of which appear to be pursuing a path to the highest levels. It is fair to say that World Sailing appear to have gone up a political cul-de-sac, but the sport should not suffer and lose its apex because of the incompetence of its administration.

After Paris when the offshore debacle has been dropped the games will have a chance to get back on track (assuming that sailing itself doesn't get dropped !) However, flood the games with with Aeros, Lasers etc etc and a lot of sailors will look elsewhere. Already its no longer the pinnacle of the sport |

Dunno about that. With the America's cup having turned into a freak show I'm not sure it isn't more secure at the top than ever before. |

Not suggesting flooding it, they were choices!
Add in windsurfing and a performance doubleheader (does it matter how many hulls?) and you have a simple games set up, easy for everyone to understand. 3 classes, alter the sails/mast for men and women, 6 medals. Then keep as many sailors and make the fleets for each class much bigger, allowing multiple entries from countries once all the countries capable of qualifying have. Of course, if politics gets in the way and you end up choosing an offshore boat which doesn't exist yet, a kiteboard hardly anyone races to an Olympic format and fiddle around with daft points systems and race formats, then you may end up in a pickle. |

Its definitely easier to win the Olympics than a Worlds for many classes Agree that the AC has shot itself again. Bermuda was amazing - first time for may years that it was a proper contest (at times) Every time the powers that be change the boats we go back to square 1 (uneven contests. The San Fransisco final nail biter was perhaps bit of a freak - the challenger races were non events Edited by rich96 - 29 May 19 at 3:53pm |

That's not the opinion I've heard from people who have done both events. |

It has to be - several countries have several works class sailors in one class
Good example of this was 2012 in the uk Finn fleet. Similarly for some countries in the laser and 49er Much larger fleets at a worlds too |

Far more pressure and scrutiny at the Olympics, a smaller fleet, but sailors fired up and looking for the performance of a lifetime.
I'd say much harder to win by putting a "good" series together with no duff results than in a large fleet. I get the point about missing some of the good guys because of duplicate nationality, but that still leaves a hell of a lot of full time, talented sailors to beat. |

Not sure 'ease' of winning is the best measure of 'pinnacle'.
Sure, the odds for any given competitor goes down for each additional boat in the fleet. But that doesn't equate to having confidence that the competition is the best format to find the best sailor. At some point adding more competitors just dilutes the competition. It makes the racing less direct. So you lose races to a qualifying series. Or have fleets so large it becomes a vastly different game and much more down to chance.
The Olympic regatta may have less depth, but with the top boat from each country there it makes the competition more direct. I often feel qualifying series dilute the end result. It quite different smashing in top 3s in a flight to top tens in gold fleet. If you're main rival for gold comes from within your own nation, then again, I don't think it makes the Olympics less of a pinnacle either, as the selection is part of what makes it so special. Like the luis vuiton to the cup match... Then you have the fact that Olympics only comes around every 4 years. |
