That's one of the joys of sea / estuary / harbour sailing - no 'owner' getting in the way with rules & regs.

My poor lake club have a new owner it's not only doubled and tripled the cost of entry but it demands all users show their level two sailing certificates. The Club membership has been decimated. |

Sometimes class rules say you must equip the boat with them but not all and RRS say you must wear one when Y flag is flown. Sometimes SIs remove the need for flag Y to be flown. However, if you have to carry one, for the chance that Y may be flown, then you might as well wear it, especially if you have nowhere to stow it. If it's very hot and I was sailing a boat where it could be conveniently stowed I'd probably do that, like many of the Merlin sailors seem to have done. Looks like rational adults making rational decisions about risk and comfort to me... not sure why that's a bad example. I'm not a big fan of sailing club, classes or events mandating personal safety, but I can see why they might be compelled to by insurance.

That is SO shortsighted. Firstly, how the hell do they expect to get new entrants into the sport? And does experience count for nothing?

It sounds like the new owners think they can make more money from fishermen or a wake board club.......

It's just a land management company, they've consulted a lawyer to protect themselves from lawsuits hence the rules, their main concern is aggregate and or landfill which has been what's going on for years, digging out the aggregate back filling with whatever, including blue asbestos, then building over the top of it, new homes this go round and the club in their past wisdom failed to secure a lease even though they've been there fifty years.
The committee tried to negotiate with the new owners and turned up three to one putting the manager on the spot and as anyone will tell you in negotiation it's not wise to out number the other side, they'll just clam up, which he did. They're preferred option is lock the gates and let no-one in, but there is a council covenant which demands use for leisure, back in the day they could have got some help from Edmund Whelan, but sadly he is no more and trying to get anything from that shell of an organisation is like blood from a stone so another RYA training establishment bites the dust, buoyancy aids and all. Cousin Edmond was very good, but there are still people at the RYA who can give help and advice.

Definitely. The RYA have a good legal team which your club get access to as long as they are affiliated.
