Yes, Dale was the venue of that tidal diagram that confused you.. So back on topic, only last week I revisited a fabulous venue that was my first National Windsurfer Class series event back in 1978 held at Newton Northumberland, the coastline up there has to be the most spectacular and unspoilt anywhere in this country, some other venues up there that were shall we say particularly testing, Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, Hartlepool. Some pleasant venues; Mounts Bay Cornwall the Nationals of 1980, Saundersfoot Series event same year, closer to home Newhaven and Seaford used to be fun on a good day, Aldeburgh up the East Coast is pleasant venue with both sea and river option. Stone Sailing Club had some epic events, although their members were not known for keeping time with the music when inspired to dance by strong drink.. We are lucky to live on an island with so many sailing venues |

How is thinking Thornbury or Portishead wouldn't make great championships venues ironic? Maybe explain why you think they would make good venues? If you've done an event from Dales share what the sailing is like and how feasible it would be to host a week long 100+ dinghy fleet etc? I'm not going to discuss tide with you though. You didn't seem to understand and I can't think of a better way to explain. I think we reached an impasse. No need to pollute further threads! Edited by mozzy - 11 Jul 18 at 11:03am |

They should all get good sea breezes witha gentle offshore gradient and cool north sea... however, the only nationals I've done in that area was at Sunderland and as the country basked in a heatwave we were smothered by the haar.
Mounts Bay is cracking, but hardly unused! Same for Blackwater, there's tonnes of events held out of there. Probably one of the most densely populated sailing areas outside the Solent! Newhaven and Seaford seem reasonable. But Eastbourne seams to have a little more going on with the wind funnelling around Beachy Head. The thing that puts me off these places is the steep shingle beaches for launching. Where is Saundersfoot?

True, it's possible, done big events at Deal and Llandudno. The thing is, while the clubs put on very good launching and recovery parties it still takes a long time to get everyone on and off the beach and then you lose one of the venues big selling points which is a short sail to race area.
Llandudno 29er/49er nationals turned into a proper issue when the breeze went northerly and picked up to a force 4. We lost a perfectly good days racing pinned on the beach. I'm not saying shingle beaches can't work and can't be good venues. I just think for me a great venue should have sheltered launching for onshore breezes.

Findhorn is fab to sail from, stunning scenery and lovely town. Marconi is a great venue too, like Stone with water all the time and has easy access to the south side of Osea island, the sunsets there are just about as good as you can get, ask any sailor that's done the east coast piers race.

Must be the only forum in the world where explaining jokes is common, and it wasn't even my joke, read the bit where it is the definition of irony is saying something is so when it clearly isn't. Portishead is a bitch one of the largest tidal rise and falls, you can practically waterski off the fixed buoys the current is that strong. Dale is OK, fairly flat estuary, lots of tactical cliffs and tides to confuse you, best you not go. All the events I travelled to back then had fleets in high eighties to three figures but were single handers obviously but in those days windsurfer events were held at sailing clubs, it was before the big rift.
