The problem with 10-15k boats is that they can be compared to other things such as cars etc. I would argue a 10k car is far more value than a equivalent cost boat. Your 5k laser is frankly a joke in compatible value terms as it is junk. Sailing has lost its way with only the wealthy really thinking this is acceptable.

In building Sprints again, forget any handicap myths, in either direction. I'm sailing my standard Minisail off 1225, and getting similar results to what I get in a Lightning or Firefly, conditions allowing. In the time I've been sailing off that, the Topper handicap has jumped 60 points upwards, but the Phantom one has dropped 25 points. I believe others are using an (old?) Topper handicap, which is simply daft, and bears no relation to what the boat would get once returns start coming in if new boats ever sold.
However, the rest of what grumph says is pretty much the conclusion I came to, and others have, over the last decade or so. I suspect the only company who might make it work are Hartley, as they have rights to many Proctor designs already. Even then, it would have to weigh in at 30kg and be totally beach proof too, which the Aero has shown can be tricky, judging by the dents I've seen. In the next decade or so it might make a good home build project, though, using pre formed foam sandwich panels instead of plywood. Or maybe foam core plywood, all varnished and pretty. But fitting it out would bankrupt me... |

Switch the word wealthy with super committed and I think you have a very valid point- either way 15k does not represent good value for a lot of people, no matter how much tax they contribute. |

I don't think the problem most clubs have with participation levels is related to capital cost. You don't need a new boat except at the top level or if you insist on having the latest trend. There are some nice used boats around for a couple of grand which are hard to sell. Comparisons with cars is quite spurious. Most sailors have both a car and a boat. A 10k car might seem like good value, but a £5k car and £5k worth of boats is perfectly viable.

How many people ‘buy’ new cars though... PCPs and lease purchase are fairly standard aren’t they?

I spend the bulk of my spare cash on leisure and leisure products, Touring Caravan, Kayaks and boats, cycles, plus necessary gear to go with them, car for me needs to tow caravan and boats, have room for gear and not so expensive that I am frightened to put damp salty things in or get it dirty on the beach etc.
Would buy new boat, but not new car.

Yep totally agree on this - cannot understand why the majority have been hoodwinked into long term renting agreements for £200 to £500 or more a month just so they can drive around in a new car! I have always bought older people carriers for a few grand, you can even sleep in them if you have too at an event!!

A laser is 5k new now. It probably has around £300 of fittings and cordage, £200 of spars, £60 sail, £100 foils and a hull that can be made from two moulds at 2 man days of effort and about £1000-500 in materials. It has a supply chain that is one or two steps but yet still costs £5k. This is hardly value for money. If a laser was still 3k then they would be still selling them. The laser without the Olympics is a dead duck.

I wholeheartedly agree, but actually, that £5k is really £4,167, the rest is VAT. When I was a teenager and VAT first appeared, it was either 8% or 12.5%, which made things interesting in my job in the chandlery, where for instance an anchor and chain were ‘safety items’ so 8% but the shackle to connect the two was not, so 12.5%.
