Their are probably more Lasers than every other single hander class put together, would have to be something cataclysmic to unseat it.
Plus they are fun to sail. |

Many more built, but many of the originals were wooden, now long since gone. Someone may know how many of each class still exist, but I doubt it. Between them they dominate. Shame about the builder. |

I have heard this many times, but I have never seen a Sunsail in the UK, (I can say I have seen one on ebay), I have been to USA and seen more Lasers than Sunsails, is there any evidence to back up Sunsail figures ?

They are very common in South America and the Carribbean, too, from what I understand. Many (most?) will have been built before the Laser was a twinkle in Bruce's eye. Suspect modern sales figures are fairly low, but just guessing.
I sailed them in Weymouth a couple of times. If you closed your eyes and pictured warm sandy beaches rather than the concrete of wpnsa, they were quite good fun. Rubbish when the wind dropped below planing conditions, though. |

True in the day - although I would say that now there are alternatives in that space and the laser class is not well supported by builder and class, so the value proposition is only really predicated on the fact that there are loads of £500 boats in bushes everywhere. T he youth pathway largely and olympic class element to some extent will underpin global sales probably to the tune of 50%. The golden goose has been quite badly throttled perhaps irrevocably. A new laser at £5k or a £ero at what £6.5k - what would you rather have as a pure sailing proposition? Also the non lasers will probably be cost neutral after about 50 days sailing due to less degradation of parts and sails etc. Although when did anyone consider through life economics even on commercial capital projects!

The Sunfish CA report to ISAF has 2,500 boats built in the last 5 years. A quarter of current Laser production, but there's precious few other classes wouldn't be delighted to see those numbers.

2500 is biiiig numbers - probably year on year second biggest seller. Oppies sell a lot but obv different builders so a fragmented market.

Oh come on, you're the one who started knocking another class. If you whine when you have to take it then don't try to hand it out. To claim that the Laser would have died out without the Olympics ignores the huge strength it has with Masters sailors, who are not aiming at the Games, and with Youth and Juniors - and yes, there are many of them even in countries that don't have the UK's squad system. Arguably, being in the Games has harmed the class. Attacking the only truly worldwide class for adults in the entire sport is hardly helping sailing. Okay, the geography and culture of the UK means that you're uniquely able to launch new classes, but that is not the situation in other areas. If the Laser class crumbles, in many areas sailing may largely crumble with it. And as for "what have you done"; as well as doing my own thing (researching the history of the sport) I created a sub-class that has been officially adopted by a class that's as big or bigger than the Blaze class, and which is involved with what is probably the world's largest producer of sailing craft. So if we're going to play the "what have you done" game then you're not the only one who holds a card. Sadly, it appears that you will never actually grasp the simple concept of actually respecting your fellow sailors enough to respect the boat they choose.

Sunfish? The numbers are actually pretty much unknown according to old and detailed interviews with the creators. But the class is much smaller than that of the Laser. Same with the Snark, which according to manufacturer's claims is about twice as popular as the Sunfish but never had a strong racing class.
