They're not doing anything 'right' , it's just that everyone else is doing things more 'wrong' with the exception maybe of RS and the Aero.
When was the last time you got offered a go in any number of the other desirable boats? Then even if you wanted one, how long would you have to wait to have it gracing your boat park? And when it turned up just how much jigging about do you have to do to get it to work properly? That Supersofa isn't 'right' it's got a totally crap rig, it just happens to have gotten lighter and cheaper at the same time and has done that joy to all dinghy sailors, not altered its handicap accordingly because there are still lots of other older heavier boats about, keeping the handicap down, so they get to cheat as well as not pay much money. The PY returns show they are well distributed across a wide range of clubs without significant fleets would indicate that they are mostly being sailed in handicap races when sailed at the owners club and that PY certainly comes in handy!!

'Dinghy marketing 101, get old design make it lighter, #bandit101' Plenty of other classes are the same. As an ex streaker sailor I would say without a shadow of doubt that new Streakers gain a PY advantage from old water sodden wooden boats. The same with new Solo's. I think the SNova is just riding a wave of popularity at the moment. People see a busy class, which attracts even more sailors.. We also have a good CA and a supportive manufacturer creating a great 'club' feel at opens... Although I race a snova I personally prefer the Solution but the thought of sailing the same half a dozen blokes at each open put me off the class and for now I'll stick with the snova.. We're starting to get ringers turn up at the big events now though on borrowed boats.. The top guys I'm sure relish the opportunity of racing against them.. Those of us further back just get peeved off that we get pushed further back by trophy collectors with no loyalty to the class.. The CA seem to be pushing this too and that's the only reason I can see that may push me to jump class near term..

Of course they are, it's the only really guaranteed successful formula, which is in itself a shame, plus whilst you have that on the one hand then the Laser agenda driven folk within Great Lakes on the other, driving the Laser well into bandit territory, is there any surprise that genuine new classes with something to offer get shoved into obscurity? iGRF,
That's assuming every handicap sailor deliberately shops for one of your PY bandits.

I think many would be discouraged from buying a boat that had a punitive PN. But I do think many builders of a new class underestimate the PN to make the boat look faster than the opposition.

Jim; you are becoming a bit of a slave to that PY data; if they are racing in healthy club fleets there will be no PY returns ...

I thought that clubs reported all race data to RYA whether from handicap or fleet races and that this is then used in the dataset Jim referred too??

If it's a fleet race, there won't be any times taken, and even if there was, then there wouldn't be another class of boat to compare against.
