Another way of looking at it would be to consider it a bulk discount.
No that is itself mostly just another way of justifying the 'additional' charge/cost. .... more 'marketing speak' weasel words really. For goodness sake just say it like it is ... |

In a similar vein it annoys me that very few online retailers show carriage charges until you reach the final payment page of their system. That means I spend 10 minutes choosing an item or two, adding them to my 'basket' (or worse still 'cart') only to discover at the last instant that the 'carriage' costs twice as much as the item itself (or, at least, costs a five times as much as the other retailer who sells the item for only a couple of quid more).........
It's one of the few benefits of buying on ebay that the carriage is visible up front (you can even rode your search for "price plus carriage" meaning what it actually costs to get the bl00dy thing to your front door).

Specific card fees were made illegal (due to abuse by many companies). You can still charge a booking fee or transaction fee (so a card charge by another name).

the RYA need to be careful with charges- we may all notice that less than 20% of the show is new each year, and there is a limit to the reasonable cost of meeting a few mates as we walk round
although to be fair, the Proctor centenary display shows a little more effort to make it a show Edited by ian.r.mcdonald - 28 Feb 18 at 7:00pm |

I think the show is excellent value - cheaper for a family than a trip to cinema (ignoring the hideous cost of the train to get there)!

What's the latest you can buy the online ckets? We want to make a last minute decision on going this year due to the Beast from the East coming west.

the model comes from the old days of internet shopping before the courier firms modernised , and weight / size based pricing kicked in fairly early - also sometimes you cant give shipping prices until you know what is in the order
in current workplace can;t tell you which shipping method we'll use until you have ordered the goods and specified your delivery address ( as click and collect uses internal transport but deliveries to home or work place can use royal mail for some things and /or courier for anything ) Ebay shipping is generally a bit of a scam as sellers often charge far more than the price of the carriage |

a poor excuse these days though as the shipping is almost always banded according to price. Some online retailers have a shipping cost shown on the website, it ain't rocket science, I try to avoid dealing with those who keep it hidden.
so you list two or three shipping prices up front, that way I know add it to my how much it's going to cost me before I add it to my order, and also if I can reach a free carriage option by buying an extra item.
That virtually disappeared several years ago when ebay started charging commission on the buying price plus postage. These days if the shipping for a large/valuable item is more than £15-20 it's 'cos the seller is in the US and you've more to concern you than shipping. I do understand that some items like sails and spars (and other such large items) will incur a much higher shipping cost than a spray top or a few blocks but there is no reason why a basic carriage charge for smaller items shouldn't be shown up front.
