Brief update for anyone interested in the boat - I had mentioned in my original post that we were having difficulty in setting the boat up for light wind conditions. Last week we convinced Jim Hunt from HD sails to spend a day with us as he had been heavily involved in the rigs design. It was a light wind day at South Cerney SC and Jim helped us understand the rig and how to make it work. Lets just say that the issue was not the rig but rather our lack of understanding of the importance of rig tension / kicker interplay upwind.
Based on the weekends racing - I would say that we no longer have a light wind speed issue! To me part of the attraction of the H2 is working out how to make a new boat go rather than just downloading the set up guide. Makes you really have to understand how sails, masts and rigging work in reality. We have our second traveller of the year this coming weekend at Itchenor which should be fun!

The joys of a new class and working out how to make it work. Good stuff H2 and enjoy.

..... Err.... you just downloaded Jim Hunt's voice to your brain, rather than some PDF instructions. Honestly, whats the difference? It's hardly working out 'how to make a new boat go' by yourself, is it.

Hopefully rather than the usual recipe list of settings without understanding, they did at least get some information from Mr Hunt about why the rig works better and what sort of shape, twist etc should be aimed at. |

I would imagine it was a bit more than a lecture, Mr Hunt would need to ask the sailors who have experience in the H2 what they thought the problems were and then bounce ideas of each other, a class that asked the designer of their sails to sort out a few issues are to be applauded.

I don't agree with Jack. There is always interpretation, it is impossible to download anything into anyone's brain.
Vision for instance is a construct and no one can say they see exactly what someone else sees/hears/feels

Cap'n Jack's comment made me smile, but learning from, and interacting with, an expert isn't really the same as using a crib sheet, even if it isn't self discovery. Should be a great way to kick start the season.

The difference is that it is tricky to get Jim to come along and spend a day with a small group because he has a million other things to do and once you do get it all sorted he does not come along with the answers, he works with the group to identify whats going wrong and then makes suggestions as to what might work and then you have to go test it out on the water and see what works with him following you about looking at the rig and taking video which you all then go analyse to see whats working and whats not.
