forecast for car ownership up to 2050 on you.gov shows ownership levels similar to now, per million of population. Expecting population to rise by 10 million.
Unemployment levels would be similar to period after "spinning jenny" if car ownership declines to some forecasters level.

.... or it could be just like the 'paperless' office we were assured would arrive 'very soon' a couple of decades or more ago.   (the 'revolution' produced even more printing opportunities of course ... )

If you really want to be green don't buy an electric car - travel less, take public transport where possible and hire a car for the few times you actually *need* one.

Easier said than done in many rural areas.

I live 20 miles from where I work and work shifts so public transport is not an option.

I could moce but my family is settled, my children are at local schools. Should I uproot them every time I change jobs? How about my wife, should she take a job closer where I work every time my job changes?

That's what used to happen in the days before universal medium distance commuting. Of course people changed jobs rather less often, which is probably not unconnected.

Being an army brat I went to lots of different schools. It is not an experience I would put my kids through.

The majority of rural tourist attractions would close, rural pubs already closing on a daily basis.
I spend at least two seperate weeks holidays in Aberdovey every year, we do a major shop when we get there, have at least half a dozen meals out, visit a tourist attraction or another town such as Barmouth, every day, probably spending a minimum of a thousand pounds, times this by the number of other tourists in Aberdovey area, then add nationwide tourists, say 6 months a year peak numbers, 6 months of winter weekend visitors.
Then in a decade ninety percent of personal transport gone, their will be millions of unemployed just in the tourist industry, areas where they live minimal chance of another job.

So let's just wreck the planet by burning fossil fuels, otherwise people might lose their jobs.

Burning fossil fuel will absolutely not wreck the planet. Albeit it may well restore the climate to the state it was prior to all that CO2 being locked up and destroy some present civilisations. But we are only delaying the inevitable anyway, if population growth continues we will outstrip all resources and destroy ourselves by starvation and civil disorder. History tells us so from the downfall of previous civilisations the only difference is that now we have the capability to do it globally.

Not saying burning fossil fuels is a good thing but we've been on the road of unbridled expansion  for while now. So we need an honest look at ourselves before getting all evangelical on one particular issue.

How much fossil fuel will Kim Jong-un’s Rocket burn when it hits the eastern seaboard?

Very emotive subject.
Air quality in Britain cleanest since Industrial revolution, OK, could be better.
Personal transport of some description is only way forward to maintain our lifestyle.
