Isn't the 'feel' and approachability of a club more a people issue than an environmental one?

Slightly off track from adopted classes question. But yes of course the feel of a club is about people, however, perhaps a small club solely volunteer run more easily fosters a spirit of camaraderie than a club where the members are treated and feel like customers.
Quite obviously a generalisation..............................?

The trick is to boost the camaraderie within an OD class/handicap fleet/club membership without making it seem exclusive to others. Clubs with a "fantastic atmosphere among mates" have folded because they could not be bothered to welcome in newcomers.
Likewise if a club seems to be "all about racing" it will drive away both non-racing members who help to boost the membership numbers and newbies who might want to progress to racing one day. |

Very true about any grouping of people and something to be aware of, what one can see as a very friendly club / class / fleet all mucking in another can see as a closed clique.

My club bends over backwards to make new members feel welcome, to the point that a new member 'T'boned clubs Enterprise, totally destroyed port side of boat, probably a write off, but club decided not to pursue matter through insurers.

The club paid for the repair themselves I’m guessing? Rather than getting legal through the insurance process... not the most friendly for someone who is less familiar with dinghy racing.

ZippyRN,
Club told him not to worry about it, just one of those things, didn't ask him for his insurance details etc. |
