The HARRIER was a boat of its time (1972). It was commissioned by Harold Smith (Lawrie's father), who was a keen OK Dinghy sailor, but he had just reached the ripe old age of 40 and was looking for something which would better suit his ageing bones. He originally wanted to call the design the FORTY PLUS, to emphasize the concept. The hull shape and ergonomics of the Harrier were Merlin Rocket influenced; it was built in solid GRP. So it was heavy, and the rig was unsophisticated and too small. But many people liked it, and still do (ask Michael McNamara, who sails his Harrier every week). The HADRON H2 was designed during 2015 as a carbon composite development of my 2011 plywood multi-chine design, the HADRON (now renamed the HADRON H1). The Merlin Rocket influence is very much still there, but now we have a super-lightweight hull and a fantastic rig, designed by Jim Hunt. A boat for the over forties? Yes, that parameter went into the mix too. Edited by Keith_Callaghan - 21 Feb 17 at 9:12am |

Interesting stuff, thank you Keith!
The H2 stand will be a must visit place next weekend to see how the finished article really looks. |

Dunno that the Harrier rig was really very much too small, but unsophisticated is on the kind side. I had one for a while, and with lowers, spreaders and full length battens the rig was transformed, even with the untapered spar.

As I said earlier my dad and I sailed OKs at Elton back then. We were very impressed with the Harrier. It makes me smile that HS was declaring 'ageing bones' at 40 (though, at the time, I probably thought 40 was old) IIRC he was OK class captain and a handy sailor. Lawrie was learning to sail in a 'Foil' back then (well maybe he'd progressed by '72). I believe there is a fleet of Harriers still sailing at Whitby so it's not an entirely lost class.

Then you are going to be disappointed. There will be no H2 at the Dinghy Show this year. Instead, we are focussing on providing two demo boats for use at any club which can muster a few interested people over a weekend. Simon Hipkin and I will be at the Show on Saturday, so if you, or anyone else, wants to have a chat about the H2 please phone me on 07906 396403 on the day. |

Hot off the press news, I don't think Keith and Simon will mind. The H2 will be displayed at the Dinghy Show 4th and 5th March. It will be on Stand G20, Desilco Sailing. Dare I suggest that all doubters, naysayers, in fact everyone, visit them and give the dinghy a good look over. There have been some developments and I'm sure Keith and Simon will be only too happy to talk you through them.

Yes, it's true. Mike Dickinson of Desilco sailing has generously allowed us space on his stand (G20, West hall). In fact, the H2 virtually fills the stand. Come and give it a look-over - and book your club demo weekend with us

I am a new H2 owner and thought I might just add the voice of a user to this post. Some background - I am in my mid 40s and have sailed since I was a kid coming up through the RYA youth squads in 420s and Lasers. Most recently I have been sailing a RS400 with my teenage son who recently decided he wanted to get into Lasers leaving me crewless. I sail on a pond with a large fleet of Solos but also an active handicap fleet. At 95 kg I am too big for a Solo and I did not want a singlehander with a kite as the pond is too small to really use it. I did consider the likes of the Phantoms and other large singlehanders but when I tested the H2 my mind was quickly made up.
I am quite fit - like running half marathons but am just a big lad. In a breeze I love the fact that I can hike like a madman and with the beam of an H2 I am almost planing upwind. Downwind in a breeze it is great fun but incredibly stable so long as you keep enough kicker on. Seems very stable in gybes in a blow too. Where I am struggling is in the light stuff where I just have not cracked the right set up / balance between boat speed and pointing and we get killed on PY. This will improve in time as we all work out how to sail the boat. Luckily we have two H2s at the club allowing so two boat tuning and maybe a third soon to come.
