Driving home from Northampton last week, I was taken by the record number of single handers, but also the low numbers of ladies and double handers.
So for those who care and are interested, I cranked the SailRacer database to look at the entry data over the last three years of GJW Direct SailJuice Winter Series. The current series is still running with healthy numbers and a record three events selling out and going to waiting lists.

Well they certainly encouraged Alto's and Icons to attend with their crap handicap I wonder what they did for the X1 then as soon as the boys did well in the V3000 that had to go... what the f**k do you expect is going to happen?
Gerrymander the handicap to suit Singlehanders and wonder why they get that result shock horror..

Why? Serious question... I mean if the events are selling out, what's the issue? |

One of the more interesting numbers games I played a few years ago was to try and correlate various factors with Champs attendance in the high performance two handers. Everything seemed totally random except for one factor: the percentage of female sailors in the class had a very strong correlation with total Champs turnout. So if the number of women participating in the sport is down that's not good at all.
Ps, congrats Nic, way to go in the new class... Edited by JimC - 31 Jan 15 at 6:21pm |

I doubt it has anything to do with h/c changes of a few boats. It's simple demographics as the thread says. Mega companies like Coke Cola and Macky D study and take the subject (demographics, not the h/c of an Phantom) very, very seriously and try to adapt. Sailing clubs are a living demonstration of demographics in action. In 10 -15 years, I believe most will be risk of folding. The remaining (mostly men) members will end up in Solos and then retire from sailing and membership will fall below a viable level.. Same with golf clubs etc. You can see the same happening in every walk of life. The biggest change will be to house prices. The oldens will want to sell up to downsize or pay off their mortgages and find there are simply to few young buyers with the necessary means. If you think your house will be your pension in 10 - 15 years time, you need to think again. A massive unwinding of demand has started and it will accelerate. The demand for everything that we know as normal - boats, clubs, houses, mortgages, loans, consumer goods, cars, hookers, drugs, drink, yachts etc - will shrink. And with it, the prices of all that stuff will deflate due to lack of demand. Already we are seeing deflation in the West. It's a fascinating subject and the sailing world and sailing clubs will need to adapt. How they do that, I've no answers. |

Because selling out through increasing numbers of single handers indicates an overall decline in participants. |

Ages going up, inclusiveness going down. Yes, it is good that total numbers are OK, but I'd rather be in a sport with a broad appeal. Just finished an RYA safety boat course. We were all male and I was the youngest on it.
Our junior group has lots of girls. If when they get too old for the group, all they see in sailing is old men, many will do something else? |
