FYI - I have been working with Simon at SailRacer so have seen this data - and a lot more! Expect to see a lot more 'mining' down in Part III.... I am writing it, honest!
There will be something for both Rupert AND iGRF/Woodbotherer - now that will take some doing! D |

Most of the girls I sail with like double handers, girl girl, girl boy, father daughter, only occasionally do they sail alone if there is no option for more social sailing, men on the other hand, we all know are more selfish.

Hardly a 'trend'. And I'd like to see those numbers with the Aeroti (Are those that sail them aerotics?) taken out.
As an amplification to Rupert's point about the Safety Boat Cse and age I was ata prize-giving tonight and chatting to a youngster who decided not to do the Club's Junior Week last year because he was told he would have to repeat L2 - despite being a regular and competent sailor who races. This was an age based decision. This is the sort of thing that really turns youngsters off - they need to be allowed to progress at their own rate. And the lack of a 'middle ground' age wise often doesn't help.

Agree, three years of data across one series could just be a blip. But as others are observing there is similar evidence elsewhere. Looking at National Championship attendance, we see a long term decline in double handers Edited by Simon Lovesey - 01 Feb 15 at 7:55am |

Funny you should say that. We have just agreed to change the format of the Cadet Week we do early in the year to be less formal and more based around having fun and enjoying sailing. There will be the formal bits as the whole point for is for them to learn but this will be intermixed with on and off the water fun showing that sailing is much more than just a competitive sport. We do expect a lot of girls on this years course too (the split has been pretty even in previous years IIRC).

Is the very unfortunate drop in women due to the fact that a higher proportion of women are crew and therefore a shift towards singlehanders also represents a shift towards a higher proportion of men in the sport?
I did some counting a while back that showed that in the 1940s or 50s, a surprisingly high proportion of one design dinghies had female owners and skippers - it was around 15-20% if I recall. These were almost all old-style local one designs. The faster boats and development classes had a higher proportion of male skippers. I'm not saying that women don't own high performance boats (lots of them do, like my wife) but if we've gone backwards in the number of female owners it could be a major issue - and if we could fix it the result could really help sailing.

I guess we fix it one sailor or group of sailors at a time, at clubs, classes or centres. Be good to hear how certain places/classes have been bucking he trend, so it can be copied. I certainly can't see it being changed from above.

Ah yes, re-reading the Yuletide article that makes sense now. Thanks for the clarification.

It's always a bit unreliable to draw conclusive evidence from these sorts of charts but they are useful.
What I see is a meaningful decline in attendance numbers in both s/h and d/h classes from 2011. Until then things were pretty static with s/h picking up ( probably the helms) of the d/h classes. I would think crunching the data from club racing across the country would look similar. And sailing clubs will need to address this if they want to survive over the next 10 - 15 years. Quite how they do this and what the answers are, I don't know.

And that decline begins at at about the time of the rise in fuel costs in particular, and everything in general. Could the recent reductions slow the decline?
Not if we're all doom and gloom anyway!
