Would you say an IC was as difficult a boat as the 300? Probably the guy sailing it but every time I've witnessed both, the reverse seemed to be the case, an IC man absolutely wupped the IOS race one year and it wasn't that light weather. I've never seen a 300 do that race, and the only time I've seen 300 sailors in action in any control there were not many whitecaps about.
I also got in one once to have a go, and count myself lucky to a) Have made the assault on the North Face of the gunwale and b) Lucky to have returned to shore dry and in one bit. Absolutely the most horrid boat I've ever been in. |

I would say an IC is more difficult than a 300. I found the 300 to be OK, a little tippy but nothing too unpredictable an IC with the sliding seat on the other hand looks like a whole different kettle of fish!
Perhaps I should sail one before I damn it as tippy though....

Should add, the I.C. sailors were both past European Champions...

Should the Fire have scrapped the wings completely and gone for trapezing off the sides?

God, no! Wings are much easier - for me at least. Besides, they'd be moving into Contender territory then. Didn't the Minisail fleet gravitate towards wings back in the day when they were big, in lieu of the seat?

The Minisails did indeed have wings.
Not sure they would be in Contender territory, really. Less big and scary, more modern rig design, fewer boats in the market place offering a near identical experience. Bigger than the Farr, and more accessible (all that Blaze knowhow behind it - maybe you could even convert a Blaze, if you were willing to take a small weight hit), and certainly fun. What I'd not want to see are wings AND a trap, like the 600. Too intimidating for the likes of me! |

I think lightweights have more choice of singlehanders than us tall awkward older types. What do you want out of 'fast'? At the end of the day, the physics of boats will always say you need length to be fast in light airs, and low surface area for the power available. That means one person hiking is looking at a narrow hull if he wants to be fast. That doesn't sit well with 'easy' in choppy shifty real life on the south coast. At least getting the hull weight down gives you 'quick' i.e. good acceleration and a lively feeling machine. So how light is the blazette? Will somebody grab the 'full carbon' opportunity and put something truly at the limits of what is practical into the market, and if so, who will buy it? |

I'd be happy to class 'fast' as PY1000 and below. Maybe better to say 'fastish'.
On that basis, so far as I know, there are no fast(ish) singlehanded classes where around 65kg is optimal that don't require above-average skill levels, or put another way, stop you getting your head out of the boat. Yes, the 300 can be mastered, but it requires practice, leading to above average skills. Even then it only just meets my definition of fast.

Well if anyone was likely to go "full carbon" it would have been Devoti given the DOne experience, but I am not sure the market would support the premium in the right volumes for this type of boat.
