Yes, very sad that suppose'd sailors seem unaware of the potential strength of WIND! Whilst I agree with Maxibuddahs sentiments, I've always made a point of checking that my next door berths are adequately secure, since it could have as much effect on me. If everybody done that regularly, then I think instances could be reduced. A whole fleet blowing over, now that is more than a little embarrassing! |

If the damage to boats is confined to the owners who don't tie them down then I agree........but unfortunately that isn't usually the case.
The club (collectively, including the boat park manager) can do something to help avoid damage to innocent parties even if it's just an e-mail to all members reminding them to tie boats down and remove masts. |

the minor flaw in that plan is that a high percentage of boat parking is just that... parking for boats.
I find it amazing to compare the numbers who actively use the club to those who are in membership utilising the real estate. I honestly thought I barely sailed last year (at the club anyway), however it was still enough times to get over half way up the main series I sailed in.... and that was in a relatively 'active fleet' by club standards.

Yep the EPS blew off it's trailer probably to avoid a desperate attempt by a Miracle to mate with it.
I should have taken the mast down, it's blown again since, maybe this weekend. Edited by iGRF - 03 Jan 14 at 3:20pm |

The good Lord seems to have decided to smite you Sotherners this year. Our boat park is intact, even my Tasar which is a real blower-over is upright.

folks who seem to deposit a boat at a sailing club in between holidays, never seemingly to use it there, but it's a convenient location and keeps the wife from nagging about driveway space. I believe West London Boat Yard, aka as Datchet SC, has this issue. Maybe it's an inland thing...

When I mentioned boat park managers, I wasn't meaning that they should go tie stuff down (except maybe in an emergency, when I hope most regular members would rally round) but as someone who has taken an interest in what is happening around the boat park, chatted to members, encouraged good practice and generally ensured owners are aware of what can happen.

I raised the issue with the bosun and was told it's OK because the boats are so tightly packed in they can't blow over! I'm quite worried as there is nowhere to tie down to. Most of the boat park is grass, but even that does not have any anchor points in the ground. My space is on tarmac. I have taken down the mast and tied the hull down to the road base so can't see it going over, those around me have taken no such precautions though...
