There is more to sailing than racing, of course...

However, I did 21 Lightning open meeting or Nationals races in 2013, only 4 cvrda/Minisail races (I think), and maybe a dozen races at Whitefriars. So, apart from the Lightnings, a very quiet year.

14 or 15 years ago, it would have been more like 120 races in a season, and it has been up and down ever since.

I also spent 10 days plus in a coaching boat, spent parts of a week sailing on Windermere, and a fair amount of time either race training or simply sailing. The latter certainly adds up to more time than the club racing.

I've only done about 45 so far this year I think. If you'd have asked me I'd have said it was more, but I just went and looked at the club results page.

A lot less than that, but I've got plenty of other sailing in despite the commitments of a young family. I've done a lot of windsurfing - with several coastal trips. and for the first time in ten years, a full two weeks off over the summer using boat and board in Spain.

The important change I've noticed this year, is that out of all the races I've done, I've enjoyed most of them. Secondly I don't feel like a break for other things really sets me back compared to other boats. Sure I don't improve much either, but I am happy enjoying it for what it is, rather than pining for some 'ideal' of what it (and I) will never be.

All in all, a good year for sailing, including the racing. :-)

Tuesday night Windsurfing is usually 4 races, Whereas to do three dinghy races takes Wednesday Afternoon Thursday Evening and Sunday morning since they're a lot slower to prepare for and finish.

So what's that on a good week 7 races through the long daylight period April to end of September then maybe one a week the rest of the time if weather permits. How many that is in a year I'll leave you to work out, however many it is, it's not enough.

I think this year I have maybe done six or seven, over the last three years I probably did that much altogether, largely because of a really bad wrist injury.  I am, however, at a sailing club of some sort five or six days in a week.  'Back in the day' I would have done 100s of races a year in the 470 and to be honest I got very fed up of it all.

At the moment I potentially have a torn cartilage in my knee, so still not racing much, but I'm really hoping the new boats will get me back in to it next year.

the knee shouldn't be too bad once it has been seen to, the D1 is far less painful than the contender, but I take your point.  I do enjoy a challenge...

But mostly these days I just enjoy blasting about and just sail within my limits.

Most Sundays, April - Nov in the two person single trapeze boat, about four travellers weekends and a four day Champs.

Not enough Saturday afternoons trying to achieve some competency in the Contender.
