Is there a way to 'measure' how well (or not) you have you straps set up for optimal posture and leverage when hiking... Without having a camera at the back of the boat or someone following in another boat with a camera? I think I hike ok and I don't get sore after sailing but am I kidding myself?

Interesting question. Maybe if you tried to replicate your position on a hiking bench it might be possible to take some measurements.

On a long beat I find I move my position slightly (without changing the strap set-up) to change pressure points on muscles and joints so I think there would be too many variables to measure. But that's probably down to lacking fitness...

As my coach used to tell me... "If it hurts you aren't fit enough, if it doesn't hurt you haven't hiked hard enough" If you aren't hurting put some effort in! Thumbs Up

You could also set up onshore, get some pics taken or get someone good to have a look at you.  I was out watching a beginner yesterday.  So many of his issues could easily be fixed by getting his posture and ergonomics right.  Never underestimate the value of the land drill.
the same, but different...

Hiking should be banned, if any part of the buttocks overhangs the gunwale it should mean instant disqualification, if not for style and dignity reasons, all that toilet seat straining, most unedifying, not at all cool.
Leaning back a bit shouldn't be frowned upon, but anything else, nope, sorry not the sort of thing a Gentleman should contemplate in public.
And as to disgusting almost pornographic displays as have often been witnessed on these boards I'm only pleased that both Google and M**rosoft are now combining in their efforts to prevent search engine access..

Good Lord, errr...thingy, for once I find myself agreeing with you. In my case I adopt an 'elegant lean' at most. 'Why hike when you can spill'.

I have seen something that might work, used in cycling to measure the angle bend of the knee.  I know what's comfortable and what's not and a process of trial and error or two-boat tuning has led to decent results in the past.... I'm just wondering if anyone out in the world of 'sports science' has ever looked at this, obviously it has been done for cycling
