Just been thinking about boats I've sailed. Little point in listing all the well known ones, but who else on here can say they have sailed a Gannet? There will be more who have sailed a Duckling. How about an Embassy? The Beachcomber should be known by a few, and the Goblin?
And on Sunday I'm hoping to add the Icon to the list, thanks to Mike L. Not that I think it ranks with the above for being obscure! |

Need to add sailed a Solo last weekend....
Lowered the average age of the fleet considerably and managed to beat most of the local Solo guys in both races....think that may have turned a head or 2..... Not bad in light airs on a boat with a flat cut sail and a floppy mast (they guy who sails it is 10 stone wringing wet) with my 13 1/2 stone of lard in it.

I wonder how this would compare with other equivalent bits of hardware. I've certainly owned and sailed much more variety in boats than I have cars. I must have ridden some hundreds of different motorcycles though, but that's because I worked in the trade for a few years.

For some people I think the equipment intensive sports creates a side line hobby. I'm certainly far more interested the boats that are out there, the boards I have sailed and the snowboard kit I've used than any of the trainers or rackets I might have used on badminton court when I played that as a kid. You see the same in cycling, although personally cycling kit seems the dullest of the dull to me.
![]() Some people get as much pleasure from building or renovating a boat as they do racing it. And we can't deny the technical aspects that drive the desires of development class sailors- I don't buy for one minute it's all just about incremental performance improvements on the race course, it can also be about just making something nicer, or simply an interest in experimentation. Sailing's a divserse sport... from the zero equipment yacht crew (bar some wellies and oillies) to the highly tuned world of something like C-Class... lots to offer everyone.

I certainly enjoy fiddling with my boats as much as I do sailing them, in fact some I definitely enjoy the renovation more than the sailing. I suppose also the perfectionist in me finds it hardf to any boat that doesn't work as it should. |

the same, but different...
