Subject says it all. Can you put a Mirror on a roof rack? Obviously you can. I guess you can put anything on a roof rack if you put your mind to it. But is it safe to do so with a Mirror? (oh yes the car is a Toyota Avensis)

Thanks

The Mirror suits roof racking really well, ie fairly light, two piece mast etc.  As a teenager I used to roof rack a Mirror on my mk1 Ford Escort. It helps to have a couple of helpers to lift the thing on the roof, and of course it's real important to pay a lot of attention to strapping/roping the thing down.

Of course you can, it is slightly more windage than a Topper/Laser so dont expect to break any land speed records (except when driving downwind in a gale)

Guess that probably about the only time you get apparent wind in a Mirror.

Thanks. On top it goes.

The only thing you may need to be aware of is that car manufacturers impose limits for roof loads these days, and of course exceeding those limits may get you into insurance trouble if the worst happens. The limits seem crazy low to me when I consider some of the stuff we used to do...

78kg seems to be the Avensis roof limit (subject to the rack you use I guess...)
Unless it's had some serious weight gain a mirror should be ok... With the gunwhales being raised above deck level the Mirror hull is particularly easily lifted allowing plenty of different places to grip without having to worry about slipping. Wide enough that you don't have to stretch too far over the car either.

When Uffa Fox raced his first Flying Fifteen, apparently he used to transport it around the country on the roof of a Humber Snipe, with the mast strapped alongside and the 400lb keel unbolted and stowed in the boot!

Before you try and put it on the roof take one of your roof bars and place it across the boat, they seem to be narrower these days so it may not work.
