Dropped down to Falmouth to look at the Cs. What amazing kit, and everywhere on every boat there's wonderful fabricated - or 3d printed or even the equivalent of 3d printing in titanium parts.
If you're seriously interested in advanced boats you really ought to get here somehow... I just got down in the evening after racing, but Invictus was just launching with the evening light slanting through the wing. Looked great. Then, with barely a ripple on Falmouth roads, they pull a few strings and she's off, flying a hull and doing some astonishing multiple of wind speed... The only trouble is a bad case of craftsmanship envy 'cos these folks are so much more talented than I am... Edited by JimC - 24 Sep 13 at 7:05pm |

I'm really sad I can't get down there. Ever since I got the Reg White/Bob Fisher Cat racing book from the library in the early 70's, I've been fascinated by these boats. Having them take flight seems very fitting for them, given what the rest of the boat looks like. The Aussie followup book, Catamaran sailing to win, has loads about the development of the full wing sails.
Interesting that it was the relative lack of allowable sail area that got them onto the efficiency track in the 1st place. |
