A traditional sailing dinghy, such as the early 14's, invariably had a heavy metal centreplate for stability.
I once sailed a Snipe - a quick one at that - with a bronze 'plate. Pikies soon availed themselves of that...

I would class the Finn to have a retractable keel. Does Ben Ainslie know he's sailing a keelboat?? |

Needs to sail more...

Maybe to be classed as a keelboat the keel has to be able to right the boat from a capsize? I don't imagine the Finn or Snipe centreboards can, but the FF does and the K2 probably does too.

I always thought that a keel was fixed, a centreboard pivoted and a daggerboard lifted up and down.
That would put the k2 and k1 in the daggerboard area, albeit with a large lump on the end of it. I guess though that there are larger sports boats described as having lifting keels but these tend to be over 18 foot, so maybe it's down to size of the boat rather than what dangles below it |

Kestrels and larks also have metal plates so are these keel boats as well?

My Beneteau 21.7 has a lifting centreboard. I call it a keel, and hadn't given it much thought until reading this thread. However the fact that it requires marina fees definitely makes it 'not a dinghy' in my book; so conversely the K2 is still a dinghy, with ballast, designed for ex-Laser sailors who, quite by chance, just happen to have knackered knees and/or backs.

I did a race in a K1, nice boat that sailed well. It does however need to be hiked reasonably to get the best out of it and I am sure that will apply to the K2. It does reduce the propensity to swim on the gybe.

I've done a fair amount of FFing and I've never heard anyone describe them as anything other than a keelboat. On account of them having a keel. As for hiking, all but the largest keelboats benefit from hiking. Legs in for preference or the make-like-a-banana legs-out version. Edited by blueboy - 11 Sep 13 at 6:09pm |

FF does usually. I've witnessed a 23 foot keel boat pinned on its side for several minutes before sinking. J24s are notorious for sometimes needing crew on the keel to encourage righting and are certainly classed as keelboats. Edited by blueboy - 11 Sep 13 at 6:15pm |
