A small blow up boat used by children to drift out to sea on holiday. |

such a first world perspective.... it's a small blow up boat used to escape the DGI in Cuba by voyaging to the land of the free (and immigrating illegally).

...or a rather modern one.
It's what WW2 airmen bobbed around on in the Channel hoping to be picked up by a really photogenic - that's the other thread - RAF rescue launch. The dinghies were equipped with this amazing (for a small boy when I had one) big cloth kite and literally almost 1000m of string to help being spotting. |

This one [k6 = boat with keel] looks quite dinghy-esqe. in this shot.

The K6 needs a re-name to fit in with the newer K1 and K2, really - it should be the K3...
Though that particular one appears to be a K2 at that point! |

No, no, K3 has to be a racy two-man "self-righting dinghy" with a trapeze. If you're old enough to want to avoid capsizing, you want to avoid undue hiking too!

I own a K2 after a couple of years with a K1. The K2's been sailed three times now. Single handed in the Lake District with a gusty 10-23 mph westerly over the hills showed the boat to have potential as a single hander. (The cleats for the genoa may need adjusting a bit so i can reach them when planing.) However the keel kept me in the boat even when I got it all very wrong.
I have sailed twice more with the intended crew of two. My wife crewed both times and despite being an occasional crew she was not wanting to come back in either time. Once in light five mph wind and a second time with 15-27 mph winds. Both times the boat performed surprisingly well on all points. I think I need to sort out the line of the genoa sheets to get the best performance. There's seems to be some improvement possible there. However the boat just wants to plane...and when it does the transition is clean, the performance is stable and progress is rapid. Having sailed a Wayfarer, Flying Fifteen, two Phantoms and a K1 this boat is not a disappointment. It's too early to say how good it is but it's definitely good. I just hope the K2 catches on like the K1. I can't see why not.
Finally while it's designed to sail heeled it seems as though the best performance is going to come from those who hike and keep it level. |

That is interesting info, Navman, thanks.
Do you have a feel yet for what would be the optimum total crew weight? The sail area looks quite large, and if the boat is best sailed upright the keel won’t be of any help except in the gusts. |

I'm revising my view on whether the boat should be upright to sail best upwind. I'm going to talk to Paul and Jeff to see what they say. I suspect the boat may point higher if we let it heel . The K1 sailing guide specifically says that heeled to the gunwhale will be fastest in sttrong winds k2? I'll tell you what advoce im given
We had an interesting race today in 18-24 mph winds. Upwind performance was mediocre but downwind, and reaching were highly satisfying. Our crew weight was helm 105kg, crew 65kg. Stability-wise we had less problems than an RS200 and seemed to be on a par with a Wayfarer. The second race was cancelled - probably due to too much wind. However I would have gone out again.

.... a Tempest you mean? Even on one of those, a bit of hiking seems to help! As to whether a K1, K2, K6 is a dinghy ... well the K6's at my place have been capzising a lot recently (though they do pop back up again unaided). For some reason Flying 15s, Tempests, k1s and K6s are "dinghys" at our club whereas Hawk 20's and international 2.4m class are "cruisers" and race on a different day. I have no idea why.
