yes- I think I was clear in that, a Bus Man's holiday- the boss makes them go. They are there to sail Solos because they have no choice. Well they do I guess... they could find employment in another industry, but then I'm sure the trade shows and awards dinners of any industry would be a lot less fun than 100 boat regattas... even in so-slows.

So, who would they be then? The Boss and the jocks, which ones are 'Pro's' and which ones are genuine from say the top ten list? And who would have sent them? I assume sailmakers, but are there boat builder jocks as well? What a shame they were not allowed to battle it out in a less restricted single handed class, then again I suppose if it were not for restrictions they'd all be up on stilts.. |

I'm sure they are hating every minute of it - the big fleets, the sunshine, the parties - must be hell.
I'm taking bets that in the light winds they have had, Grumph would have been at the back had he taken his eps along to race. They are allowed to battle it out in less restricted classes - the International Moth has its fair share of pros - but the Solo offers a different kind of sailing, and obviously one that is popular. |

I dont think i have ever seen so many BFD's. Its mental! I would of thought they would use a gate start for a fleet of that size? Albeit its great to see the results being all over the place like they are. Loads of what you would call ringers or proffesional sailors. Testiment to the Solo fleet really! Its just a shame that the jocky's are only rolled out for the nationals. It makes you wonder why the Solo has never really grown out side of the UK.

Well how do we differentiate? I guess it would be useful for ISAF sailor classification to be stated, then a prize could in effect go to the best amateur post income tax full RRP boat owner, as well as the best of the best and the best of the rest who sail on trade deals in return for donkey demoing, internet pimping and/or friends with benefits type of favours.
Not that I really care either way personally, it seems that every class has its share of ringers and works teams, it's no surprise that (one of) the most popular adult singlehanders attracts them, as it does in the Moths and Merlins. |

And what if he'd been forced into one of their coffins? As I see it, having had a good look at one at the dinghy show and down the lake recently where one of our blokes as just swapped a '92 wooden one for one of '64 vintage. They look fairly easy to sail to me, smaller sail area going to favour lightweights in low winds surely. I've only been beaten over the water by one once in a total drifter when he got clear of the lot of us in a puff, in the EPS, and they say the Laser is quicker at least one of those dudes in the video did. No I think in those conditions, I'd be disappointed if I didn't manage to get somewhere in the top twenty, even never having sailed one before, it's Hayling and big fleet tactics, not something I'm totally un familiar with. Never going to happen though, all the time I have the use of all my faculties.. |

for starters- they are a National Class, not an ISAF class, so there's really not much of a desire for it to grow too widely. Isn't Carveth the most recent World Champion... now ISAF control the word 'Worlds'. Secondly, there's a strong Netherlands fleet, and pockets of solo sailing in Australia with exPat types. So not exactly no export, just limited. thirdly, why? Why would you try and establish this old class in a new territory? It's one thing sailing it in the UK where there's an abundance of used boats, local fleets, quality support from the industry (P&B, North, HD, Selden etc) but to set it up somewhere else, when there's so many nicer, probably cheaper boats to start afresh with.... that's just crazy.

mate, you'd be lucky to be out of the bottom twenty... as would I. You need to set your expectations better otherwise you'll only find disappointment in this sport. |

You could start a list, name and affiliation. Post it here somewhere. I really have no idea who does what for who, I'd be interested, other than the obvious Steve Cockerill, Ian Pinnell, I really have no idea who does what for who and where would you go to find out. There's no shame in it, a list of 'Pro's & Ams' and a little bit of their sailing history/bio, would make good reading, someone should do it. |

Dont think anyone is denying other classes have them James. Any decent sized class anyway. But you tend to find they are associated in classes where there is a commercial gain and maybe not just because they want the kudos of the nationals title.
For example:
Merlin
Solo
GP
Ent
Phantom
to name a few, all of which have some form of open book in terms of hull builder and sailmaker. The Jokeys are used as every manufacturer wants to win as quite rightly this gives them massive marketing pull. Nothing wrong with it in my opinion just a shame the amature sailors lose out as lets face it they are the ones that bring the big numbers and pay these guys wages!
