I can understand the changes for safety following the tragedy a few weeks ago but surely they would have sat down with all the teams and and hammered this out to make it a smooth transition? I am guessing they must feel disadvantaged by the changed concerning the rudder and displacement.

Wouldn't be the AC without legal action.

It gets worse as he has now said that if the international jury find in Luna rossa and etnz favour then he will effectively cancel the racing by going back to the coast guard. I feel that this is a farcical turn of events as how can the 2 teams implement these to there desgins so close to racing with out making there boats more dangerous. It also leaves oracle to spend the next 2 months (and the fact that they have had these since April!) fine tuning them.

It was great to see New Zealand powering around the course but what a farce the event is turning into.
The trouble is we have known for some time that the event is going the way that Americas cup events do, but now its being streamed live on world wide TV! And to make it worse the racing on Tue, and Thur should have Artemis in it so they are going to be one boat events as well... perhaps even no boats if Luna Rossa dont get the news in time? Credit were credit is due however, Andy Green did a good job of making a complete non event sound interesting. Ian

omg, it's worse than dinghy handicap racing... at least with handicap racing you can pretend your racing some one else.

Stating that the AC72 class rules 5.5 and 8.2 absolutely need to be changed for security reasons is fal.se
There are numerous ways the efficiency of the winglets could be increased without changing the original AC 72 class rule. The real reason is that from the start, Oracle was designed as a "foil-assist" boat, with small rudder winglets placed there mainly to stabilize the boat, which was already fairly stable as the hulls touched the water. ETNZ and LR instead went straight for foiling and have bigger winglets on the rudders that give the boat the right kind of stability needed when foiling. In other words, they complied with the original class rule by designing winglets and positioning rudders so that do they not exceed the 14.0m beam or 1.0m distance from the stern plane even with rudders rotated. Oracle NOW knows that to have a chance of winning it NEEDS TO FOIL fully. It also knows that to do so effectively and with control, it needs far more stability from the winglets than it currently has. However, to do so within the original rules it would need to: 1) Change the cord of the winglets but this would also increase drag – NOT GOOD! 2) Move the rudder forward to have a longer winglets – but this would mean a MAJOR REDESIGN of the boat. So guess what ? We change the rule in the name of security at the last moment !!! To be even more malicious, I would guess that the rules are being changed precisely to legalize the current Oracle winglets – the ones it has been sailing with for some time and which were in breach of the rules until now. Read the rule change for yourself at http://www.cupinfo.com/downloads/ac72-class-rule-safety-acrm-redline-062813.pdf. Look for rule 5.5, 8.2 and the NEW rule 8.9 |

Possible decision on Luna Rossa's protest today 1 hour before they are due to race.
Seems to me the America's cup is like a woman, can't live with them, can't live without them. |
