I can't comprehend how a company with a monopoly on the Laser in this hemisphere doesn't make a profit, but this probably does not matter. Either it can be turned around, or restructured. The Laser itself was not dead in the water, and the right to build/sell it is a serious asset. |

This is probably not a profit issue, which are often transferred to lower tax areas anyway. The issue is usually cash flow, and therefore struggling to get supplies.

It seems in Europe and NA they just cannot get it right though. I believe Australia has had a stable builder for a very long time now and they are going well. In this neck of the woods they have tried to be too clever and tried to maintain the monopoly and overpricing of parts for far too long. Once that bubble burst they were always going to be in trouble.

In Australia, did they avoid expanding into so many different boats?
The Laser/PS empire used to be huge in the Uk, Dart cats, 2000, 3000, SB3 etc etc I guess the market for much of that has shrunk.

PS distribute for RS in Oceania. So yep, they've got better products in their range if it all goes completely tits up.

Correct but the 2000 and SB3 have left the Laser stable for similar reasons to that surrounding the Laser 1 (non payment of roylaties) I am told. The Dart cats were either dropped or split a few years ago and the 3000 seems to be doing better now it is away from LPE......I am sensing a theme here. Let us not forget the the man behind LPE also has previous for buying a business for the design(s) then right royally screwing the owner of these design over (if you believe the available information).

LPE's problems were surely not just caused by a licensing agreement with Kirby, just seems as if they 'allegedly' completely lost their direction over the last 3-4 years. No consistent range, little range class support, spares hard to come by, loss of good people, localised website showing boats not even sold here and put together with a baby pushchair business .........
I have no idea who is wrong or right on a legal basis, but hardly think its going to be a glowing Harvard Business School case study of how you develop and run a business! |
