I'd say that at any open event, whether it be a dinghy week, an Open or a Handicap event, you should use the kit that the class rules say you should use. Unless the event specifically says it doesn't mind.
At club level, you can come to what amounts to a Gentleman's agreement (with apologies to Ladies - it is an old fashioned expression) as to what is allowed. That really isn't possible at a National or Regional level. In those situations, I don't really think that the "13' 10 1/2" Kirby Hull with Rooster Rig" approach really works very well - sooner or later people will start to develop rigs which, whilst looking similar, produce more power, be impossible to set a correct PY for and we will end up with 50 pages on here about it. |

Looking forward to it coming out of the closet, as it were. You'll have to take it for a spin at Tamesis, just for the headline in the Y&Y writeup of your experiences. |

I think if people start taking racing seriously with alternaive sails, it would be very simple to ask for a declaration that it was not bigger, or have a simple set of measurements. The length of three sides and a maximum roach wouldn't be hard, but outline of standard sail with a small tolerance would be trivial. Probably measure the batten lengths too. Of course if people wanted to develop sails out of nice material, or longer battens, then they should expect a different PY. To be honest, I'd probably trust the Rooster trademark just as much as a Laser one. It's not really in the interests of Rooster to sell a real boost in speed. If somebody thinks they can win the BM by having a bigger sail on their Laser, they could easily build their own sail and transplant the Laser label. It's less likely to be of genuine concern to PY racers than say a class like the iCon, which might have made real development since the PY was calculated. Frankly I'd love to see more of the youngsters with cheap old boats and imitation sails broadening their horizons to bigger events. Maybe the very top events like the BM are not the right place for that. That's for the people who run it to decide. |

When I sailed Lasers I would have welcomed the opportunity to purchase authorised sails at replica prices, and no doubt such a Utopian environment would render the Class Measurer's life somewhat easier today.
On the other hand, the RRS are quite explicit, and not in any way concerned with the cost of equipment.

The real margin in the Laser is derived from hull construction, hence the separation of Laser Sailboats Ltd. (Banbury) from LPE some years ago, with retained ownership. If they lose the ability to build hulls then I imagine the receivers would be happy to sell the Laser / sunburst trademark to the highest bidder.

How much do you think the Laser sunburst trademark would now be worth in the sailing industry (Europe and North America)? At the end of the day it's just a badge. You could make your own up for nothing.

The real margin is from selling the boats as a package. |

Clearly they are not, otherwise thousands of words would not have been written here debating the meaning of "class". |

Or, more likely, that people ignore them!

Most of the posts have been a matter of people wanting to read what they'd like to be in the Racing Rules of Sailing but which isn't there. Remember in spite of all the venom that's being directed at the Laser Association this is simply a matter of getting a clear interpretation of what the RRS have been saying for many years. To blame the Laser association for getting clarity is unfair. |
