having checked the photos of the 900, I am now pretty much convinced of my theory. All hail the RS809!
Incidentally, presumably they will be sailing this to test it- I'd guess from Hayling or similar. Presumably forum users in the area can keep an eye out/ If you see it on shore, can see if the mainsail still has the glue marks from the 900 logos?

I would presume it would need a stiffer rig to carry the square top. Otherwise it could be a bit of a flop.

The gold threads are Kevlar, the black threads are Carbon. So no the sail cloth is completely different!

Don't forget you can do a lot with varying caps and downhaul tensions, and even more if you change spreader lengths. And that also presupposes that the current mast is exactly the ideal stiffness for the way crew weights and techniques have worked out in the class. And fashions in rig setup have probably changed since the rig was designed too. So that although you'd expect a stiffer mast to be preferred, it might not be needed in practice. |

it's probably polyester, if it was carbon, twaron, technora (a form of aramid) or other high modular you lot would be complaining about the cost of a mainsail!
Most hydes one design sails are made using a specific type of cloth that is constructed just for them. Cost and aesthetics are the major parts not performance (otherwise you would have high modular yarn like technora but at double the cost...) This tends to be cheaper as it does not contain the high performance yarns but is coloured to make it look sexy, most of the cloth suppliers now make a polyester race laminate that looks like technora/twaron/carbon but for a fraction of the price. |
