It is allowed in the class rules and, for those that run any kind of tension on the rig, letting the forestay off was an option. I fitted one then took it off when I realised playing the angles was far more effective in any breeze.
That was after my time but the theory is that as you run so little tension having a spreader that moves will allow the boom to go out further. on a boat like a Solo where the shrouds have practically no tension on them at all you will probably get a similar effect. I know the people at Hunts in Solos can get their booms out a long way (also helped by having that Shock cord that attaches at the kicker mount on the boom).

Just sail the angles, look for the pressure and forget about by the lee

DDW is a great leg of any course. I can't understand sailors who don't like it? Loads of tactical options... even when restricted by shrouds

I agree (unusual for me to agree with PM)
I should have said that, IMO, more often than not it pays to look for the pressure rather than play the shifts downwind

I'm surprised any one with a real boat can't enjoy DDW, I was once one of the unenlightened, then I brought a Finn. The finest teacher of DDW anyone could buy, now I enjoy sailing every leg. Moral buy a proper grown ups boat!

Err.... I did have one... That 1 to 1 mainsheet business can be a bit of a strain on the shoulder when your crouched in the middle looking back for gusts and one hits...

Er Why would anyone be crouched in the middle? That's not something I have ever done in a 'proper boat'

Surely it would be a tad uncomfortable to sit down- you know, those 'proper boats' having iron medieval torture devices bolted into the middle where the centreboard should be?
