Hi all,
I'm an experienced 470 skipper, recently moved to the UK and looking for a crew to team up. I'm new to the system here so please also share any info you might have about 470 sailing in the UK. Right now I'm working in London, but ready to commute places where I can 470 sail!

Outside of the four ring circus, is there such a thing as a UK 470 fleet anymore??

Very little, its about on a level with dead classes like the Boss and 5 Tonner.
But I don't believe any of the SW London clubs, for instance, have what you could call reasonable fleet racing in any trapeze two hander.
There are clubs that have good numbers racing Fireballs, but all a fair way out from town I think.

what happened to the fifth ring or has global austerity met a new low today Russ?

Yonca- best piece of advice I can come up with is to contact Datchet Water Sailing Club- they have a fleet of RS500s racing there and you could probably get some advice and guidance.  Okay it's not a 470, but it's the only proper fleet of single trapeze double handers around the London area that I know about.  (there may be others out there of course...)

They also have fleets of Musto Skiffs and RS100s... so if the doublehander doesn't work out there is still plenty of interesting singlehanded options.

Surely one of the most significant features of the 470 is that it has a symmetric kite that uses bags?  I'd have thought a hiking boat that had that would be more relevant than an RS500 if you were working up to racing 470 at top level.

But the only large fleet in UK that still uses a symmetric with bags is the Fireball, isn't it?  Certainly, in the past F'ball was always considered UK's best 470 trainer.  Worth travelling for, I'd have thought.

I'd ring some people on the Fireball committee for a chat if I were Yonca, to find the nearest fleet:

Is there not a 500 fleet at Datchet?

When I glanced at club race results I didn't see significant numbers regularly racing, but I'm happy to be proved wrong.

Shoreham ( http://www.shorehamsailing.org/ - http://www.shorehamsailing.org/ ) has an active Fireball fleet and attracts sailors from far and wide (London, Kent, Berks, Bucks) on a regular basis. Probably the closest comparison to 470 sailing in the UK today (single string, symmetric kit, bags).

very good point- it's all a load of DNCs and handicap results.  I guess that's quite common thesedays..... Cry

its a little bit like the Musto fleet there - i think.  They have 10 boats, soon to be 12, but typically they just arrange to sail as a fleet when the wind is best, that's my understanding of it anyway and I hope that's how it works.

I don't know about this class, we don't have it in my country.. I'm 50kg, do you think I'd be considered tiny for it?
I emailed them already, thanks for your advice

Assuming you are talking about the Fireball then a 50kg helm with a decent size crew on the wire (85kg - 90kg) would not be a problem.

There's a Merlin Rocket fleet (technical symmetric hiking dinghy) at Welsh Harp (Wembley S.C. http://www.wembleysailingclub.co.uk/ - http://www.wembleysailingclub.co.uk/ ) in north London and various others on the Thames in south west London at Tamesis and Hampton
Olympic 470 silver medallist Stu Bithell sails Merlins too!

Javelins at Southwold, Carsington and Glossop if you want to move. Are there no 505 arround down there? At 50 kilos how about a 420?

50 kilos is what? about 8 stone? I'm 10.5 stone and I used to have to weight train like f*ck to achieve enough upper body strength to helm my Osprey competitively. I've helmed 505s too and the sheet loads are about the same. I expect a Javelin will be in the same ball-park. I would not, in all conscience, recommend any of those 3 as a long-term option for the OP (nor would I recommend Carsington or Glossop to someone based in London). A 420 is a cracking idea though and I'd also recommend that the OP follows Pat's suggestion at least once and have a go in a Merlin. Maybe he/she should go along to the Forumite next month?

Well, he did say that he or she would commute but I suppose there are limits. However are sheet loads less on a 470? I know little about them really except that helms are light.

Slightly off thread but as a point of interest. I know of a Lady Osprey helm who is always in the top flight light or heavy weather and she is certainly not relying on being all muscles or weight to achieve her results. Perhaps the full raking carbon rigs are helping to even out skill vs strength.

Possibly. It's 20 odd years since I raced them. I've heard that the carbon rigs help the lighter crews. In my day the Proctor Epsilon ruled. Crew weight has a big effect as well. My last crew was a generous 15 stone so we were always powered up which tends to increase sheet loads.

We still have a couple of 470's racing in our fleet, one of them Bithels old boat, both Father Daughter teams , they are very good sea boats, do well when the wind's up. One of them sailed right over me at the start on thursday in a bit of a breeze (4-5), bloody nuisance they are when its windy..
