Hi all, I've just become the joint-owner of a Laser New Wave - that's the Laser 2 with an asymmetric kite that was introduced for a short while at the end of Laser 2 production and before the Laser 3000 was introduced. Has anyone any idea how many were produced? ........or where I might find out? It appears that this is a slightly rarer boat than we first envisaged ......we've done some digging: The boat was built by Laser in 1994 and has a plate showing its number as LLG 385 (i.e a different number series to the Laser 2). It was purchased by a work colleague as a brand new boat directly from Laser ...collected from their Banbury facility. My wife contacted Laser today and was told that they thought only about 100 "New Wave" models were produced.....they weren't certain and they were going to try and confirm a number for us. The boat looks almost pristine now that its had a decent clean and I suspect that it'll get a thoroughly good rinsing once we've launched that kite ! Was it not a fork of the Laser II Fun range rather than the Laser II Race range?

I've already spoken to Nigel about this one because I sailed one a long time ago when they brought out the boats. Laser took one to Oxford to trial it and I sailed it with my 470 helmfrom that time. Nigel, get hold of Will Gulliver, he should know more. And I hope you're planning on bringing it to Hunts for the cvrda open!

The only rarity I can remember about the Fun New Wave, was the odd occasion when the kite would come down cleanly into the chute. It was the reason why, as a Laser 2 sailor, I gave up on the New Wave after being initially intrigued one Minorca holiday. The kite arrangements were really very crudely cobbled together, with that pole sliding over the foredeck. Our sails are just as colourful ! .........although, yes, it is a mystery why the sails appear to bear the letters 'mu' rather than 'nw'. Our boat hasn't seen much use for some considerable time and the mainsail appears to have shrunk - it's definitely well shy of the mast top (it's been suggested that the bolt-rope itself may have shrunk?) Pull the main all the way up before placing the boom on the gooseneck. you will have to pull the boom down quite a bit to get it on ( 1 to 2 inches if memory serves even with new sails). If it just won't go then indeed the bolt rope may have shrunk, if so unpick the stitching that holds the bottom of the bolt rope and ease it up an inch or so and re-stitch......Have fun

That why i am looking for any information and fotos of the new wave dingi, espacialy I liket to know, where the genakerpole is fixed to the boat and what kind of fittings are used. Volker, I would strongly recommend that you try sailing a Fun New Wave, then try a (Laser) 3000 before embarking on any modifications. I think your choice will then lay between the 3000 and staying with the Regatta symmetric layout. In my experience, the New Wave (and I gave it a good try-out in Minorca back when really it was new) it was a a bit of a lash up, and I wasn't at all surprised when Laser quickly dropped it and did a proper job of converting the, in itself nice, Regatta into an asymmetric in the form of the 3k. Just my 2 cents worth, but I was and remain a fan of both the Regatta (the nicest symmetric boat I have ever sailed on a spinnaker reach, tho' I have reservations about the fit-out) and the 3k. Thank you for the information. As I know the hull of the 3k und the laser 2 is the same. The difference is the cockpitlayout. I am sailing my boat singlehanded for a five years, I never used the spi because it is too difficoult to handle for only one person. That is why I want to change the symetrik layout to an assymetric one, this is better to work with. |

Making the above quote about the Regatta indicates that you cannot have sailed a vast number of symmetrical 2 man boats. I owned a couple of Laser 2 regattas back in the day when they were very popular, but they were only ever slightly pleasureable on a spinnaker reach once you had thrown all the Laser centre ropes away, moved the spinnaker pole eye down to the gooseneck, and either bought a massive diameter spinnaker pole or changed to uphual attachment point to the pole end. Then you had a chance to stop the spinnaker disappearing around the forestay everytime a gust hit which resulted in lee helm. As a crew, they were the most fiddly akward uncomfortable boats I have ever crewed on.
Try a Fireball for spinnaker reaching for ease of handling and speed.

Yep, 505 pole, dyneema sheets, loads of mods, but once you'd done that the Regatta was a great ride on a spi reach, steering with the mainsheet (a necessity the rudder was useless) - very satisfying once you got it all in balance. Other trapeze-symmetrics I've owned? 420, 505, Fireballs (two, the latest a Winder), Hornet, Jacksnipe, but I stand by my statement re. the Regatta. Undoubtedly - in the right, lightish wind, dependent on how much you weigh. I did it in my 505 and Hornet at odd times, so a Fireball would be relatively easy. But for normal racing we found 65kg helm plus tall 70kg crew on the wire about right in the Fireball. | I too own a New Wave boat number LLG179 and have had her since 2004, but have not smiled her in quite a while. I have cleaned her last week, checked the sails and rigging, replaced trapeze shock cord, replaced the jib furler rope, signed up to sail again at my local club. Does anyone have any tips as I’m a little rusty and will be teaching my kids to sail this summer. |

Thanks Rupert. Just spotted you sail at Whitefriars SC, I also do and I have a feeling your daughter went to school with mine as we used to live in Purton. There is a high possibility, that you also came out of the sailing club entrance on Wednesday 24/06 as I was going in for my afternoon sail! Hope to catch up with you soon when times are less strict!
