Hi

Has anyone ever dyed their sail or am I being stupid?

My dinghy which I bought secondhand has two good sails however they're discoloured a little bit so I was wondering if I could dye them to brighten them up.

Thanks Peter.  I'm not experienced enough to know what or what I can't do when it comes to these things.

As you say, they're very expensive.  I was quoted a price 50% more than what I paid for the boat, just for a mainsail, so new sails isn't an option.

dont worry about the colour of the sails really, if they are still crispy that is all that matters, to be honest if they are dacron the grime will probably reduce the porosity of the cloth and so increase the efficiency of the sail, so dont worry about it.

Crispy????????????????

My sails are softer than my boxers, does this mean they're well past their best?

new (woven) sails are coated in plastic to give them greater dimentional stability giving then a crispy feel rinsing the salt off them is the nearest I would go to any kind of laundering

Thanks for the info.

My sails are not coated in anything other than dirt, however this dirt could be holding the threads together so I won't do anything too hastily.

Seriously, I'm giving my old boat (new to me) a complete facelift so maybe next year I'll go for new sails.  At the moment I'm filling in little cuts before I give it a coat of paint, but I hope to get a few days in her before the winter comes.
