Me again, sorry.

I need to do some re-rigging which will involve end to end splicing for continuous control lines. I've searched on the forum and looked at various websites (P&B, Rooster etc) but can't find any good info.

Anyone got any useful links to hand?

The RS link is useful and explains how to splice dynema type core end to end. This is what I referred to for my kicker arrangement. Alternatively, the Kingfisher Evolution Breeze, seems like an interesting option which would not leave the internal core exposed after splicing. I believe LDC have this and the splicing needle.

Actually, having looked at the link, one other question. Is there a specific way of tapering the inner core or do you just cut a few bits at intervals along the length, wouldn't that leave it a bit messy?

Ellistine thats the splicing video for Excell control, which is a different rope type (you remove the inner core and the outter carries the load) i found this stuff hard to splice.

IWSmith:- I find if its 4mm control line you dont really need to taper it to much if at all, i find just cutting the outter at an angle tapers it enough. However on larger lines like excell fusion 7mm you do have to remove secions of the outer along its length to get a proper graduated taper. The RS fact sheet i posted above is (i find) the quiest, easiest and best way to create an end to end control line splice. However the splice itself does not hold in cleats well, so in between races i always ensure its in the middle of the take up systems (if you have them fitted)

One thing that is worth noting is make sur eyou have a splicing needle and not the fid for 4mm control lines (dont think they make a fid that small anyway) Also when you stip the inner from the outter always pull the outter cover back down by running your hands down the rope, then when you are sure there is no more outter gathered stick a needle through untill you have nearly completed the tapering, that way you will be sure the outter is a tight and neat fit round the inner before the actual taper.

I used the excel control and yes its hard to splice until you work out how best to milk the needle through the line, BUT once its done it looks so much better than ropes where the inner is spliced.

It wasn't the needle i struggled with but pulling the core through, go there in the end, but it was a ball ache. It does look better in that you can not see the finished splice. That and the fact that its a fair bit cheaper then excel racing.

I ended up using the Rooster fid with the Excel Control. My first attempts in the Dinghy park were hopeless because I had not tapered the outer core enough and it is easy to end up with a lumpy splice. My number one tip is practice the splice at home again and again. If the core does not pull through reasonably easy, do it again. Then when it comes to the dinghy part it should be straight forward. Double check the rope run before starting the splice (I speak from experience!) . Tools I used were exactly as per the Rooster vid + a piece of board to work on to save the boats decks, and very sharp nail scissors for trimming the outer core.

I used Excel Control for my continuous kicker. It didn't think was too bad to splice.
