Hi all, Hope someone can help me with this.

I recently bought some 4.8mm SS (I guess) rivets from RS for the carbon mast on my RS700. I also have monel rivets for the aluminium boom on my Hurricane. Trouble is they have got themselves mixed up in my toolbox. I think the monel rivets have a hint of yellow in the metal as opposed to those for the carbon which are more silver in colour. Is this right? I don't particularly want to throw them all away and buy afresh but neither do I want to use the wrong ones and risk corrosion so is there an easy way to tell them apart? BTW I duralac thoroughly for both types.

corrosion isn't the problem, carbon rivets "break" more easily reducing the compression required to crack the mandrel off.

I've used normal monel rivets, just be very carefull when riveting to avoid unecessary damage to the carbon.

Can you use a magnet?

I hadnt thought of a magnet. But neither stainless or monel have magnetic properties and I suspect both use mild steel mandrels. Thanks though I will give it a try.

While some (esoteric) grades of Stainless are magnetic, a general rule is that stainless in not magnetic

I gather that Monel is softer than the stainless. So get yourself a knife or small file & see which scratch easier.... Hope that helps.

sorry photo not showing for reasons unknown !!!Angry

carbon rivets I have have two indents in body , guess one nearest head is to stop rivet mandrill pulling too far into carbon and snapping before it gets there .
