Just purchased 748 with the old rig. Haven't yet stepped the mast but hoping to do so next week when work finishes for Xmas. Everything looks in shape so hopefully doesn't need any work although I need a new kite sock as the other is in bits. Does anyone have a base set up that will get us going? Any tips for virgin 49er sailors!!?

that used to be my boat when i was campaigning. Cant really remember the settings for the rig as it was quite a while ago now.

Have you tried the 49er association website, and also they have a pretty good facebook page. If not Simon Hiscocks, and Skiffman (Dylan Fletcher) are frequent visitors on here, hopefully they will be able to give you a good base point.

thanks for the reply. what are the chances are that!! so how was 748? it's in good condition for it's age. at this point hopefully you don't have any tales of it sinking!

after posting this i found Simons base settings Shrouds 28 - 29, Caps 14 - 15, Lower bend 10mm.

The good news is that the 49er base settings seem to be universal. As soon as you are beyond mastering twin wiring you have to make sure you have the base setting correct and can then de-power from there. For normal club sailors I would say you only need light / medium / heavy settings. Spend the rest of your energy on boat handling.
