There are 'fake' sails available but if you wish to race you need to purchase a genuine sail. It is interesting people are still talking about the mark 5/6 debate. At the Garda Worlds Aron won using a mark 6 and pretty much the only person using a mark 5 in Oz was Michael...

The current sail is a Mark 6. Although there tends to be a few mark 5 still hanging around. In the 49ers we changed to pryde sails but there are still a few North sails hanging around but the numbers get smaller each year...

Quite intrigued by that, Jon: hadn't heard that one before. They are supposed to be one-design! Do you think the UK ones are faster or just better made?

Regarding importing: generally the shipping company will make you pay VAT and import duties as well as shipping charges (as you are legally required to do) and these take a big chunk out of any savings you think you might be making. Just looking at the price in the USA can be misleading. Shopping if you are over there is another matter, especially if you don't exceed the personal allowance on what you bring back.

Being one design both sails where ment to be produced from 3.8 once dacron but the UK sails always seemed 'stiffer' if that is the correct word.

That might be the amount of filler rolled into the Dacron. It's a while since I used any Dacron sails!

I believe all Laser sails are cut in Canada and laser welded at intervals and shipped out to a loft for finishing.  I believe its Hydes that do it for Europe and somebody else for the Americas and somebody else again for Asia and Australasia.  So the cloth is the same for all and the shape should be pretty much identical also.  What may vary is the quality of the stichting.
