I seem to keep crashing other peoples threads so I thought I would start my own.

I bought this 12 in the summer and sailed it up to about the end of Sept. I then brought her home where she sat in my garage for a month or so.
I then talked my wife and son(11) into helping me turn her over for a coat of paint.

I had read on here (i think) that a random orbital sander would be the best bit of kit for the job.
I planned to just rough her up a bit and give a fresh coat of paint. There had been a couple of repairs that had been varnished to seal.

After half an hour she looked like this .

This is point where I decieded to take the whole lot off.

That was about 2 hours of sanding.

More tofollow if your interested. ?

Looking good Paul. I always like a nice 'project blog'.

Looks like your bike will need a bit of a clean and oil to get rid of the paint dust!

And onto the other side.

A couple of previous repairs looked sound.

I had to use some paint stripper to get into the corners.

Then 3 coats or Eposeal 300 was appiled.

Just got to wait 7 days for the epoxy to cure.

That is such a nice hull shape.

What condition is the inside in?

Really? Appreciate your garage may not be quite 15°C, but if it is, then min time before sanding is 28hrs (according to the data sheet). The time does increase exponentially with decreasing temp though.

I left the keels on because no one gave me a good enough reason to remove them. I did plane a few milimeters off them.

The Data Sheet for the Eposeal says "if the primer coats of eposeal are to be overcoated with a solvent free epoxy system, then the eposeal must be left for 7-10 days to ensure it is thoroughly cured"
Yes it can be sanded a lot ealier.

Maybe I have it wrong ?

i think old boats with history dont matter if they have a few battlescars it shows they have had interesting and eventful lives. Those repairs are a little rustic though.

You've left the tumble drier door open too.

Quite right about leaving the epoxy to cure - it will be giving out solvents for quite some time, which can stop the next coat drying, cause eggshelling - all sorts of things. If the garage is unheated or poorly heated, it would be worth leaving it longer.

Just been reading the instructions for my next coat and it says it is solvent based primer..!
The Eposeal says I have to wait 7 days for a solvent FREE overcoat ?

Now I'm confused.

Paul,
Id wait as long as possible with Epoxy, 7 days min, longer in this damp weather.  I coated my mast(with west system) intend to leave my until next year now before any varnish goes on.

The solvent in the Eposeal will stop a solvent Free coating from going off. If you were using a solvent based product (same solvent) it wouldn't necessarily be a problem.

Think I will just wait for next weekend...the Eposeal was £25 and the next coat was £32 and I haven't bought the top coat yet. Don't want to start all over again. Not worth risking it, won't be sailing it until next year anyway.

Don't fancy buying it back by any chance? We're trying to rennervate it as the moment, it works fairly well but isn't pretty.

(Ps Not really on the Hard sell!)  I did like the boat to sail mind.

Rough Diamond is looking good!

I sold it in about 95/06 with a lovely varnished foredeck and new blue paint job. New blue paint covering the original gelcoat finish. The colour was described as autumn sick by the previous owner and that will live with me forever. Was a fun little boat.
Oh and I sold it for £425 :-)

Looking good, that inspires me to shine my boats up Clap
