You do not need to be a member of a club to get involved with Marine Conservation Zone planning, in fact the main reason for setting up the http://www.mczmapping.org - Interactive map is to enable divers who do not belong to a club to more easily engage with the project and tell us about the areas important to them. We have created maps of sailing and powerboating distribution and intensity in the south west from the information given to us by divers so far. We want you to take a look and let us know what you think. These maps are NOT attached to this post, but are available for download on our website under the "general tab" of the http://www.finding-sanctuary.org/page/resources.html - resources page . Once you have downloaded the map(s) relevant to you, then: 1. D.4.1.3 – Sailing – represents the distribution of 20174 sailors from 111 interviews engaged in the use of sail powered craft only including yachts and dinghies. 49 of these interviews were with clubs or watersports centres of more than 10 people. D.4.1.4 – Powerboats – represents the distribution of 24449 sailors from 92 interviews charting motor driven vessels only and includes RIBs, PWCs and motorboats. 46 of these interviews were with clubs or watersports centres of more than 10 members. D.4.1.7 – Anchoring – represents the anchoring habits of 45807 sailors from 66 interviews. 64 of these interviews were with clubs or watersports centres of more than 10 members. The The majority of this data was collected from clubs in Devon and Cornwall. There is information from Dorset and Somerset yet to be included. A gov't spokesperson (note, not spokesman!) was quoted as saying "We've conducted an extensive review of this here Quango and are pleased to present the results of this long-running process: Firstly we have wasted thousands paying the consultants from the other division of xxxxxxx to review the work of their colleagues, Second the review has concluded that the review was a complete, frivulous waste of cash that could have refirbed 20 schools and cleared every lake in the land of killer shrimp and Thirdly that we can't print copies because the dept for spurious claptrap has exceeded it's printer paper budget for Q4" |

You'll all be pleased to hear that we're not infact a Quango, We're a partnership project with a finite lifespan - once we have submitted the south west recommendations to government in June next year, we'll be shutting up shop. If you read the position currently being advertised, you'll see we are looking for a volunteer data officer, this person will be processing all of the information that peopel who value the areas they use have supplied us with. In terms of boating, anchoring sites are probably the most important because they are not mapped by anyone in the way that fixed moorings are. Hence, it is very difficult when our Regional Steering Group are assessing which activities may be affected by a Marine Conservation Zone to take important anchoring sites into consideration when suggesting levels of protection (i.e. what is and isn't allowed). I'm sure you will all appreciate how important being able to drop anchor for safety reasons is and therefore how important it is that this information is mapped.
