Has anyone heard anything?

I have heard of lots of problems with them supplying (or not supplying would be more accurate) parts and new boats.

I know of someone who waited around 8 months to get a new boat.

Anyone know anything they care to share?

I decided to get a new Laser for Fed Week and the Masters Worlds. They promised it the week before Fed week but slipped a week - this was against the backdrop of supplying a load for the Worlds.

When I did get my boat, I found the rudder gudgeons mis-aligned (another club member pointed it out to me as he walked past and spotted it by eye but he does build boats) and the bottom mast section was out of round so no top section would go in. They told me the gudgeons was just a visual thing and they would sort it at Hayling by resetting the fitting; I tried it myself but the rudder was still a force fit with massive friction/squeal stopping it turning. I measured the screw holes out by 5-6mm. When I raised the boat up on land and fitted rudder and centreboad, the tip of the foils were out of alignment by more than an inch. I complained and they agreed to replace the hull and I got a much newer number. They admitted they had a batch of 5/6 that had the problem.

Net result was a lot of stress leading up to a major event.

Laser were not at the SIBs as we know so they could concentrate on "web stuff" now I think there is more to be honest.

I know of a "new customer" who had to request a new hull as his was not perfect but had to wait ages for one. I also believe Laser had numerous issues when Holt ran into difficulties. I think things are smoothing out, Laser had a busy period building Lasers for the Hayling Worlds.

with a company this big they surely can plan ahead enough to provide enough boats for the worlds without messing up their supply chain

Thats exactly what I was thinking .. They pump out how many boats a week, its not hard for them to plan ahead a few weeks (They know when the Worlds are, so maybe even a few MONTHS!) and get some extra boats moulded up every day to make sure they have the numbers ..

Are they really that big a company though?

Probably not in the greater scheme of things, I've been unable to find 'them' to do my usual credit check looksee, what is the trading entity? I tried Performance Sailcraft Ltd, but they dont appear to exist, certainly not at companies house in that guise.

No recent accounts filed, the last were 2008, but a substantial company at that time if a little like all of us during that period, suffering a downturn in profitability.

So can't tell anything from figures that old.

I'm not greatly bothered. If one Laser builder goes toes up another one will arise in its place!
