I have heard that an organised gang is going around stealing outboards. Any
clubs suffered? Any solutions?

Well we got done about months ago. No real solution tbh,
we have really gone to town making the motors look awful
hoping to prevent it happening again But to be honest if
they want something enough they will get it!!

We haven't been targeted this time round, so far, but we went through a spell a few years back of the occasional theft, break in etc. This made us invest in an alarm, decent locks etc, and we were fortunate in having a couple of members who were handy metalworking types we built us very secure doors with hardened locks/housing for the boatsheds. They also built us a couple of very secure and hidden areas where we locate the few relatively valuable items left at the club from week to week. We've also encouraged use of the club during the week by various associated (and trusted) groups, such as scouts, so that the club is rarely without a trusted person present. But club security can be a real issue unfortunately given the location and nature of where typical sailing club premises are.

As this forum appears in google listings probably best to limit what your club does to pm's.
We have gone similar to what Merlin boy has done, paint the thing a wild/odd colour. painting the cowling and engine makes it harder to sell on.
also engrave your clubs details into the engine in more than one place, after all, does your club run it into the ground or replaace it after xx years?

We're fairly lucky at out club (not saying which) because we have a small(ish) island in the middle with a small bay. So we store the committee boat and the
rescue boats over there. Which means they're out of sight of any passers by or thieves who break onto the club premises. And to get the boats we have a
small rowing boat to get across which is too pathetic for the thieves to steal!!!

I sail fairly regularly at Wells Next The Sea on North Norfolk Coast. The Wells Harbour Commissioners in conjunction with Norfolk Constabulary market a cover (made of good quality boat cover material) which is fully weatherproof and replaces the cowling when the engine is not in use. The cowling is stored away from the boat. From memory I think they come in two sizes and cost approx £15.00 each.
I think outboard theft in the area has virtually been eliminated as the likely hassle and cost of obtaining a replacement cowling isn't worth the effort to the gangs.
