I have just bought my first Contender, and coming from a Laser im not to familiar with shrouds and whatnot, and allthought there are loads of articles on how to sail the boat I need some advice on the following things.

1. How to rig the boat from scratch, i.e putting up the mast, and what tensions on the shrouds and lowers for my 75kg body etc etc

2. sail controls how much kicker, outhall, downhall for light, medium and heavy winds.

Any advice or info of any other articles on this would be greatly appreciated

Matt

Matt, you'll find a tuning guide and lots of other useful info on the British Contender Association site:
http://www.sailcontender.org.uk/ -
http://www.sailcontender.org.uk/

lots of stuff on the yahoo group site:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/contender/ -
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/contender/

plus there's some good stuff on the international site:

http://contenderclass.org/ - http://contenderclass.org /

Which boat did you get in the end, and where will you be sailing it?

It is my boat!  Well done Matt!  I have already worked out the settings and they shouldn't be far out even though I am currently a bit more lardy than you are!

I hope we are delivering it this week, but I didn't realise we had agreed Tuesday!  I will check it all out when her indoors gets home from Cardiff later today.

To be honest, ive only been out 3 times,
it is fantastic boat, quick to rig, fast and not out of control.
It is a challenge but doesnt feel out of control.
A pleasure to sail and I would certainly recommend the boat

Yep it's a good boat! I have sailed her several times as it used to belong to Contender443. He was planning to name her "Tickety-Boo" but never got round to getting the stickers done. I think she was declared as "Tickety-Boo" in the entries at the Worlds in Medemblik 2007.

Great though Contenders are, and in many ways a lot nicer than hiking (I certainly enjoy going past the Lasers on a long upwind leg), I think the truth of it is that they just make you ache in different places - after a couple of great sails on Sunday, and not been sailing as much as I'd like recently, I woke up on Mon morning thinking I probably needed a hip and a knee replacement! The aches had mostly gone by midday, but Contenders certainly aren't ache free, at least for those of us of a certain age.

If anyone's after a proper cheap (but solid) Contender for the winter to see if it's for them, then do get in touchWink.  (Trying to raise funds for a newer Topper for daughter)

I might be interested in some "proper cheap" parts if you have any, as you can never have too many spares i.e sails, rudders etc etc

No "spare parts" to speak of (comes with 3 sails), but you could have a whole boat, trolley, everything as spares for a mere 500!LOL
