What do you do to work out overall series results when the crew on a boat changes during the series?

Depends on what your SIs say about crewing. At Hunts as long as the helm remains constant then they get 1 set of results regardless of the crew.

If the Helm changes with a constant crew then it is 2 sets of results.

Saves a lot of hassle!

If we go by the strict letter of the rules, and the SIs don't say anything to the contrary then the boat enters the series. Who happens to be sailing it on any particular day isn't important. Normally though the SIs will include a paragraph or two about crew substitution etc.

For club racing I would suggest as much flexibility as
possible so as to encourage maximum participation.

Strict letter of the law:

Rule 75.1 stipulates who can enter a boat in a race;
Rule 46 states that the memeber or organisation that entered a boat shall designate a person in charge who shall be on board;
Rule 47.2 states that crew shall not intentionally leave a boat during a race

Anything else must be in the SIs. Appendix L 19.1 suggests "Substitution of competitors will not be allowed without prior written approval of the RC/PC/Jury.

As a long-standing crew I do not see why the helmsman should be the determining factor.
How about an SI for club racing series : The Person in Charge designated on the entry form shall be on board when boat is racing. Substitution of the Person in Charge will not be allowed.

You could allow for substitution with prior approval.

It is actually quite important to know who is the person in charge as they may be liable under both the racing rules and/or the law for anything done by the boat.

I knew this was going to be more complicated than I thought.

Our situation is that we have a Spring Spring series of 4 races and a couple of boats who entered have had different crews on board for one or two of the races (same helm). So when it comes to working out the overall result should I count the boat & give the trophy to it's helm or work out the different combinations of crew & helm on an individual basis?

I'm trying to keep it very flexible and friendly because we are a wee club trying to grow in numbers, I'm thinking trophy to the helm & a bottle of plonk to the crews.

Is the tiller twiddler the owner of the boat - in which case give the boat the prize, and then think about rewriting the club's SIs, having first decided ewactly what you want to acheive.

Ah well, the tiller twiddler is only part owner of this particular boat, the rope monkey at the front (me) owns the other half. Our boat has had consistent crew and helm and neither of us are pot hunters so we're not bothered about that I just wondered what other clubs do about crew variations.

That sounds like deep trouble with the crew's union...

Seriously though I (as a long serving forward hand) think its bad manners not to give same prizes to both halves of the team, even if it means handing out two crew prizes... In a handicap class one would hope that extra trophies for boats using multiple crews or helms would be balanced by the savings on trophies for singlehanders with no crew...
