Not sure if this a beginners question. The reason I ask is that I have come across people who gained a level 2 (dinghy) some years ago but havent sailed since. The MOD require that you have a level 2 before sailing one of their boats, in theory they are entitled despite however long ago they were deemed to be 'competent to sail in light winds'. I know that any of the teaching certs need revalidating every 5 years, but I dont know about L2, Intermediate or equivalent. Anyone know for certain? ------------- Still swimming with an RS700! |

I dont think theres an official expiry but it just needs
the application of some common sense, for someone who have level 2 even if they havnt sailed in a year its often worth a refresher before their let loose. Often just chatting to the person/watching them rig you can tell. |

If you can rig a boat, sail it round a trianglular course and return to shore without bashing it you should be ok. At the centre i work at, people are required to have L2 to hire a boat, although I can quickly assertain if they are to that level if they dont need assistance rigging a simple double hander. If you are going somewhere, speak to those in charge, say you own XYZ boat and they may let you take one. ------------- |

level 2 doesn't require revalidating but if they haven't

Well, I've got the RYA Certificate (inland waters) one - from before the thought of "Level 1" or "Level 2" (probably about 40 years old). Can I transfer it to a modern one? As Quagers notes, many boat hire places will look at the way you set out to rig the boat - if you make too much of a hash of it they'll take action. I do remember hiring a Soling on a verbal basis - only problem I had was trying to snag the mooring at the end of the day - I couldn't stop it like you do a dinghy.... |

ColPrice2002 - I would give a centre near you a call and speak to them. If you are in need of a new type of certificate, you might be able to do the Level 2 sylabus in a private lesson and they could sign it off for you then. I remember hiring a catamaran in France with my brother without my L2, sailed it fine and then returned to the beach sailing downwind at the guy waiting to catch us.  ------------- |

Nope, no expiry date for L2. Allthough I wouldn't reccomend letting someone who hadn't been out in a while with only the L2 "basic skills" cert loose on with a boat on their own. As an SI with the combined services sailing association our policy is to require that any members from other clubs or those who haven't sailed in a while or hold old or foreign qualifications do a half day refresher course and then take action from there.
