I have bought a second hand jib that is brand new for my Cherub. I didn't pay much but I am struggling to fit it. It does NOT have a luff wire but it has a zip ! My boat does not have a forestay ! I would usualy pull the jib up pull on the highfield lever and relase the trapeze wire that I use to hold the mast up when the jib is not up ! Is the sail itself strong enough to hold the mast up ? (I doubt it) Do I fit a fore stay and zip the sail sail on and adjust the highfield for the sail luff tension ? Do I get a luff wire made up , zip it into the sail then lace the sail to the luff wire ?

get a forestay and get it tight enough for you, then attach
the head of the jib to the end of the halyard, zip it onto the forestay and use it to tension the luff. Make sure you dont put more tension on the jib than the forestay though. just a question, where did you get it? also, you could get a luff wire made up for the jib, zip it

basically both your ideas will work and the jib will not

It depends on if there is a point on the mast strong enough to attach a forestay that takes all the rig loads. If there is not then it would probably be esiest to get a luff wire made up and use the haliyard and hyfeild leaver as before. Just put the wire in the luff pocket and tie the jib to the luff wire at teh top and adjust the tention with the lashing at the bottom. The way most zip luff jibs are setup is to have a forestay taking all the rig load attached to the mast with a T-terminal just like the shrouds, the rig tention is pulled on at the bottom with a boat breaker and you use a chain plate for the adjustment. A light haliyard is used to pull the jib up. The advantage of doing this is that you can get rid of the weight of the heavy wire haliard up the mast, and also it reduces the compresion in the mast.. ------------- If it doesn't break it's too heavy; if it does it wasn't built right |

I'm guessing at how you have your mast set up from what you describe but
you could do this* if you want to keep the lever. Either connect an old jib luff wire the same length as your new jib to the existing system with the addition of a shackle and block. Or get a new one made with a crimped on block. You could also do this with SK75 / PBO wire rope. Then haul the new jib up the forstay on the new jib halyard running through the block at the head and down inside the zip luff.
