hi everyone, im in a bit of fix. i have a old parker 505 and have spent a long time doing her up. resently i took her out of warsash and she filled up. i have no idea where the leak is but need to find it since i will die if that boat does not sail.litrally. anyideas how to find the leak with limited resources? thanks

you could fill up the inside off the boat and see if you can see where the water is coming out, or you could spray the outside with a hose and get another person to look in it to see if they can see any water coming in. ------------- nikki @ fishers green s.c |

fill the bath up with water and then submerge the boat in the water.
you'll see the bubbles coming up where the hole is.... works with a
bike inner tube, why not a 505?!  on a serious note.... what is the hatch cover situation in your 505? would it be possible to get it a bit wet and then check the hatch covers to at least try and roughly track down the problem to a specific area before it all gets wet. When you fill it up, if you don't see water coming out
anywhere, try putting on full rig tension. This happened to us and a (thankfully old) 420 the other day. As soon as we put on tension, we saw the mast had been put through the bottom of the boat, (someone was a bit 'pulley happy'), and the water came pouring out... |

What is filling up - the cockpit or the bouyancy tanks?? If it is the tanks try is - connect the tanks to a bicyle pump and inflate VERY SLIGHTLY - no more than 1 PSI. Mix up some washing up liquid and water in an old fairy liquid bottle - then pour the water over everything and look for bubbles. If it is the cockpit then filling the boat up is a good plan - but again go easy! Normal leaky bits I have come across include self bailers, centre-board pivot bolt, transom to floor joint, center-case to floor joint, mast foot area, hull deck joint (usually only an issue if you capsize), bouyancy tank drain bungs... Have you put the boat in the water again since this outing? |

Best device is one of these two way pumps. Its a good idea to set it to suck air (this keeps the pressure the right way) and lisen for any immediate hissing around the gunhules. My 505 used to leak cronically and took ages to find the leak. Also, when you were sailing, did you capsize or tip the sides in, if not, it may be worth looking along the keel band. btw, what sail number is it? ------------- Life's a reach, then you gybe |

hi everyone, thanks so much for the replies. i think im gona try the fairy liquid one first and then if i cant find it with that the pump. my sail numbers K8048 for the person that wanted to know. its an old parker. picked it up from my old club, the mastfoot shattered though lucky the mast didnt go through the floor.but anyway thanks. it slowly cam consatly into the middle section, between transom and mast foot and then just got higher and higher untill the boat started getting lower and then i was worried we were going down from portmorth to warsash!!!! anything else you'd like to tell me about my 505 would be amazing, anything at all, throw it all at me! cheers ------------- Nick |

Don't know much about 505s but favourite culprits if there's nothing really obvious are self bailers or around the centreboard case, maybe even C/B bolt. If you are going to fill the boat up you need to be careful with loading - better to do it on the grass, but then you can't see under the boat!
Hatch cover, Bouyancy tank bungs or fittings into the tank are most likely culprit for leaks (but to get a lot of water in the tank you either need two small leaks or a fairly major one). Most tanks on G/F boats should have some foam in them (probably loose in the tanks) so if you have a major sinking event the boat doesn't actually end up on the seabed. If you put a bit of hose pipe into the bung hole (suitably sealed) you can suck some air out with your lungs. Good Luck ------------- Garry Lark 2252, Contender 298 www.cuckoos.eclipse.co.uk |

Does your 505 have the pipes through the decks for the shoud tensioning? Try putting a piece of neoprene over the outboard end. Its amazing how much water comes down the pipe when you dunk a gunnale. Centerboard bolt's a good shout, plenty of bathroom sealant should do the job. ------------- Life's a reach, then you gybe |

How did you get on creaky let us know mine seems to be ok now capsized on sunday and was only a cupfull in which I suspect had cone in through my dodgy bungs!!

hi everyone, its the famous 505 guy here. i would just like to thank you for all your sujjestions and advice. it really has helped. at the moment i have just gone round all the fitting making sure they are all ok. does anyone know if getting rid of the current inspection hatches and putting new ones in is against the 505 1 design rules? i hope race my 505 in the nations as a classic so may meet some of you....... aNY ADVICE ON MOVING HATCHES? thanks again nikc creak ------------- Nick |

Just make sure that you've got the big kite on it. Regarding sails, when i did 2 nationals in 7546, the majority of the top boats had the kevlar main and dacron jib combo. Some of the boats may have some old(ish) sails they'll sell you for not alot. ------------- Life's a reach, then you gybe |

yeah, im using my old sails at the mo, kevlar are sail to be the best but mine do me fine, corse i have the big kite, what else! my boat flys when shes not sinking. i need a new jib, or new 2nd hand ish. something like that. thanks for the advice about the hatches, i think there my main problem at the mo so im going to see what i can do about it. mayb just glass over the old 1's or smfin of that sort. but ive done so many repairs, when will they end anything else any1 wants to know about or any sujjestion let me know, anythings good, o and 505 guy, when was your boat built? mine 1988! nick ------------- Nick |

Mines 7567 1983 I think bit retro but I got a new cumulus mast and a monster kite ''yeah baby'' its even got a measurement stamp from the 2004 worlds hows that for kudos!!!Any way won the handicap fleet on sunday singlehanded!!Didnt use the kite though !!Sack sailing a buzz single handed sail a 50h.Anyway its a blue rondar with launcher would love to do the nat's but prob won't be able to get a crew ,might just drag the boat down there anyway!! ------------- 505 7567 |

well it would be nice to meet you and laugh at your 505 when it gets showed by my young 1988 parker fitted with old school super spare, ballon kite i think and crappy old jib. mines black red and white with two great holes in the frount from a barstard comming outa warsash a few years back, got to fix them. you know anything about the requirements for the nations? becuase ive basically re-rigged my 505 completely, sort of, lots of new bits and re-nmoulded old 1's. you can just about use the buzz spinnaker on the 505, i am going to try and attach a pole to the frount of mine but the heights about right and just sits very far back without a pole, have had lots of fun ragging with that. but nothing compares to the almighty monster kite ey. wrt back nick THE BEST 505 HELM the world has ever seen!! even with a sinking boat ------------- Nick |

You'll need a measurement cert a compas and some kind of paddle.I've actually got a certificate for mine but I dont know if it'll still be valid ,I assume theyare valid for the life of the boat but not sure.Anyone know for certain??Other than that think youll just need to register not sure if there's any kind of qualifying restrictions but 5oh association should be able to tell you that .Also a bit of practice wouldn't go amiss!!!I know the association run training at some of the open meetings a training only days etc but I havent managed to get too any yet with the crew situation .Mind you not doing too bad since I only got back into boats last year after a decade sabbatical.Should hav done it sooner! ------------- 505 7567 |

yeah, but a A symmetric give a lot more speed when reaching, even than the monster kite i find. but anyway, you get a completly different sail with the different kites, plus the buzz spinnaker is quite large anyway, i only tried it becuase i got given an old A symmetric. ------------- Nick |

My 505 has had leaking Elvstrom self bailers - new gaskets were needed. Sounds as though your problem is at the mast foot / centre board case. Could be tricky to find.
The international 505 website has many useful articles on-line about fixing problems with older boats and links to all countries of the world with a 505 class association. Try there. |
