Five Britons have been detained by the Iranian navy while sailing a yacht from Bahrain to Dubai, the Foreign Office (FCO) has said.

The sailors were crewing a boat belonging to Sail Bahrain when they were stopped on 25 November.

Of course it would be really helpful if we actually knew if they did or didn't
stray into Iranian waters.... surely the race was GPS tracked?

They weren't actually in the race yet, they were on the way to the start so the GPS tracker wasn't fitted, it was planning to be fitted in Dubai.

Rudder broke was the version I heard this morning.

I thought all you pro guys can steer without rudders..

I heard they had rudder difficulties and so were drifting into Iran waters. That said, there are apparently very confusing and changeable rules as to who owns which water. Human error, lets cut these guys some slack.

What I don't get is why does Iran need to hold them regardless?

We are not at war or anything

I heard the reason was to establish if they had evil intentions, maybe I am naive but how much wrong can one do on a racing yacht?
