a product used at someones club (I forget what class uses it a lot- but aparently it works)

Astonish has been mentioned and aparently was recomended by PBO and is nice and cheap.

Another alternative is Jif/Cif stuff (or other household cleaner)

Hope that gave some ideas, Hopefuly other people will be able to give more specific advice.

Rubbing compound as used in car body work finishing.  It takes a very thin layer off and if you want a good shine finish with "T Cut".

oxallic acid is the "mutts Nutts" , the best way to restore white boats to white ,easiest , quickest , unbelievable !

First time I tried it I was gobbsmacked it took me 30 yrs to discover !, being a natural sceptic , I rarely believed the claims of boat cleaners claims and before oxallic never found any particualy effective .

Look out for grp cleaners that contain a high concentration of oxallic acid (check ingrediant list ) .

It does the work of 10 hrs meticullous t cutting (bar blending in scratches) in 10 mins !!!!!!!.

All you do is slapp it on with a big floppy paint brush , have a jaw with a mate for 10 mins and hose off !!!!!!!!! and you will not believe the difference , an instant night and day result !!!

To make matters even better , you can make your own , buy a box of oxallic acid crystals from your chemist and mix up your own - disolve as much as you can into warm water , add detergent to thicken , and your off, I just did a yellowed 32 foot  yacht in 30 mins !!! and made up was probably better than mixes off the shelf

As with all preparations that burnish the top layer of gel coat it is best to apply a layer of polish to seal in the results .This applies to T cutting , polishing pastes etc

Oxallic acid I believe froms from fruit (lemons etc) but the forum nerds will clarify that, it is adsvised to wear gloves , googles, but it only nips a bit !

ABOVE ALL , IT REALLY WORKS, CHEAP, EASY , FAST ,ASTONISHING RESULTS, AND I'M DEAD IMPRESSED IF YOU HADN'T GUESSED.

Hi catmandoo, you are right Oxalic acid is effective stuff but check out the thread called 'little black marks' for a link detailing what precautions should be taken when using it.

Use a product called Y10.
Don't know what the ingredients are, but it looks like blue hair gel (if you
use such nonsense) and the hull goes white before your very eyes!
hose it off and Bob is surely your Uncle!
job done..

I've found using a cutting compound works well - even removes light scratches etc. You can buy it from Northampton sailboats etc - its called 'finishing paste' or something, alternatively, Halfords sell their own brand cutting compound (comes in a yellow tube costs about £5)

Hi I am new to this site, so Hello all.

Talking of cleaners I have just used Easy Clean on my saddler. I read it in the May addition of PBO and it was in Sailing Today in June (no I dont read every sailing mag ).  The test results are on their site http://www.avantsupplies.com - www.avantsupplies.com I must admit I am impressed with the results must be the quickest clean up I have ever done. One bottle covered all of my 34 ft hull.

Great site wonder why I Havent heard of it before.

Thanks Black no sugar ( thats the way I like my coffee to)

I think I have been a sucker to most sailing hype so its nice to buy a product that really works. Now I need something to keep my prop clean. I have tried just about everything from hard racing anti fouling to stove blacking

Keeping your prop clean, heard a roomer that black permanent marker pen ink works, discovered when someone wrote on a prop and a year later there was growth on the prop  but not where they had written. After that there is a wonder product called 'prop speed' with a wonder price tag, meant to be the best out there but allegedly keeps it clean for two years.

Cillit Bang is good for cleaning up old GRP. Worked a treat on an old Laser.

When I used to work in a boatyard they used to mix up a gloop of 50:50 mastic and grease then smear it onto the prop. But whatever you do don't let the fowling settle otherwise it causes pitting and that really messes up a prop.

why not just go over the hull with some fine sand paper. Will make the hull smoother, and also clean it....2 birds with one stone

Morning Stevie

OK once or twice but if you do it to often you could end up going through the gelcoat.

I wouldnt do this, in my opinion it is a sure fire way to get osmosis as you shave off the waterproof outer skin and then the hull sucks up water.

Wow, looks great! The hull of my dinghy is reasonably oxidised - mainly at the bow - will this help remove that or will it generally be better to 'Cut & Paste' with two products (my favoured option at the moment tbh)

Hi flea

I got it to get rid of the waterline staining (yellow) which was pertty bad, it got rid of that and the engine exaust stains. Not sure what oxidisation is, but I have been using it ever since.
