Comment from one of the reports:  "but only after XXX/YYY crossed the line to silence, having started the wrong side of the start mark – oops."

Surely you would know if you started the wrong side of the start mark?

On no other evidence, so I could be totally wrong, it sounds like they were trying it on and got caught.

No I think it's probably just an honest mistake. Some gate starts they lob the buoy off the back of the gate boat and away you go. If you start before the buoy gets dropped then you get DSQ, but I personally prefer the gates where petey pathfinder sails away from a mark that was laid earlier in the process - much easier to orientate the fleet (IMHO)

1st day off the champs I could imagine it's possible to not be fully up to speed with how that club start their nats, so I would put it down to honest error.  In a similar vein in the photo below can you say for certain (as the helm) whether you've hit the gate boat?

Care to give us a little more detail what this is about?

Its from the day 1 report from the RS 200 nationals, someone was leading the race but didn't get a hoot as they finished

Laser4000: I suspect you are correct, an honest mistake.

I had forgotten it was a Gate Start, rather than a line start. So people would have much less experience about what to expect: both the sailors and those starting the race.

Chris, There was not a single person at the event who thought it was anything other than an honest mistake.

Laser4000, as the yellow 200 bounced back 3/4 of a boat length just after that photo, I think he knew.....

and the way he is backing his main looks like he is trying to stop.
